Straw Handbag

Obviously we are still completely loyal to Dior but let's turn to Genevieve Antoine Dariaux to see what she has to say on this pressing subject: The Straw Handbag.

For the summer (your wardrobe requires) a beige straw handbag, which can be of a rather coarse weave if you spend your summers in the country, or of a finer texture, such as Panama, if you stay in town. In any case, a straw handbag is an indispensable accessory to summery cotton and linen dresses.

-from A Guide to Elegance

This straw handbag is the Brompton Straw Mini Hobo and you can see it HERE.

I would say that it has a finer texture. It is a soft-sided bag with a strangely sturdy covering of nylon straw.
You can rake your fingers over the texture and it doesn't budge, yet it looks very straw-like.

Of course I love this bag. I've always been a huge fan of baskets and other items with natural textures.
To have this handbag as a primary and unfussy accessory in the heat of summer is its brilliance. For July and August most especially it would complement every light frock or skirt you could imagine, and because of its neutral character it would certainly set off any type of light sandal or espadrille.
The size is roomy yet not oversized, this is the "mini" version of this handbag after all.
It is fully lined in cotton twill as are all JCrew handbags and it came with a flannel dust-bag for winter storage.

Well it gets my vote, how about yours?

    1. Hi Ina, I do like the clutch version of this bag too, I think it is a better option when compared to the rigid straw clutches from the last 2 years, easier to carry and more refined, a city as opposed to a country bag (if we are referencing Ms. Dariaux!)

  2. Looks Great. Thanks for the review. I'm off to order it now.

  3. I have a half moon straw bag I got super cheap from somewhere ages ago. I use that and one white leather bag for spring and summer (if I'm not just going with a clutch). I love the straw bag too--it reminds me of what Jackie O would have used while yachting around the Med!

    1. Hi Dannie, I love white leather bags but can imagine how fast I'd wreck it? Chocolate pudding, red wine, mud, sharpie pens...
I agree a straw bag is very Jackie-O!

  4. Hi Dani, great addition to a summer wardrobe - looks like it would hold a lot of (my) junk as well!

    1. Hi Sulky Kitten, This is a roomy bag. I can't imagine how big the large version of this is, you could probably carry a toddler in it!

  5. You may be swaying me to purchase a straw bag this summer. I'm not a fan of the quality of the Brompton in leather but I love the shape of the bag so a fabric, straw seems like a great way to go. Enjoy it!

    1. Hi AmW, I am also a fan of the Brompton in leather and all JCrew handbags really, I've been going nuts for them this year, I think they are all gorgeous. Drinking the crewlade over here!
I do think a straw bag is classic and still sort of unexpected because it evokes a vintage feel.

  7. Thanks for the review Dani! It is very cute, and I'm glad to hear that the quality is good, too. How is the weight? Is it light or heavy without anything in it?

    1. Hi FFM, I forgot to mention that I do not find it heavy, though of course this is subjective. I don't find the Tillary too heavy (this is lighter!) This bag is also lighter than the Brompton mini-hobo in leather, which I own in the coral color.

  8. Ooh, loving it Dani! I'm set for summer bags, as I found a canvas and leather trim bag recently at the Land's End outlet for a song. But should it make it to a nice sale price...we'll see. ;) It will be the perfect (and practical) complement to all of your frocks this summer!

    1. Hi M, Yes I think I'll use it plenty and now I have this along with the blue Tillary, which I will definitely be using on summer holiday.

  9. Oh it just says summer and ice cream cones, my mum had a bag like that and it always meant summer holidays to me. I think they are lovely with espadrilles and light airy dresses.

    1. Tabitha - did you happen to try on the minnies in LA? Am curious what they are like on our body shape?

    2. WMM, Minnies are so hideous on me! Have you never tried them yourself? I wonder if Tabs doesn't have a pair?

Tabs, If your Mum had one that only reinforces its great style!

    1. Hi Sue, Yes I love baskets as well. About 10 years MrBP begged to "please stop buying baskets" and I did listen to him.
I don't know why I love them so but I suspect it's a nesting thing!

  11. This bag looks perfect for the summer and will go with everything, it will bring summer vibe to every outfit even if you wear a black dress.
And I spy a new pencil skirt...

    1. Hi ajc, Good spying! I have skirt reviews tomorrow. And the chambray top that you also have which I had to sacrifice for this bag, more on that as well...

  13. This looks like a great summer bag Dani. Not only pretty, but practical too, with the nylon straw. Great choice!

    1. Hi Patricia, The nylon seems tough which is nice, if it was coming away from the bag or seemed as though it might I would have returned it.

  14. I love the retro feel of it, and I think it would look great on you, and anyone your age. For me, because those sorts of straw bags can look a mumsy, I carry a French straw market bag as a purse during the summer. I've had the same one for years.

    1. Hi Kathy, I have 2 straw market bags that I bought in France last summer that I use to get my groceries. I am slowly wrecking them. I am very hard on my things just like a little kid.

  15. I had a Michael Kors Santorini bag for a few years and loved it but I found the size too small to be practical so I am off to investigate your J Crew bag...
like Kathy I have a French Market tote that I use for casual shopping expeditions.

    1. Hi Hostess, I think you would like this bag, it is a great size, at $200 not too bad for a bag like this which should last for many many summers.

  16. Love this Dani! I almost ordered it last weekend, then stumbled upon its sartorial sister at Winners - a Steve Madden that is slightly darker, but just as lovely and only $50! I think yours is slightly more elegant than Steve's! I also use the straw tote in the summer and have two and just love them!

    1. Hi WMM, your Steve Madden bag sounds great, and what a deal!
I seem to be blind to all but the JCrew bags this year. It's like I'm on an I-V of crewlade.

  17. I think this bag is genius, straw totes can be very unpractical in the city (I have the big one with the flower from two summers ago but I only use on vacation). This one has the same summer feeling but it is a real bag (and it has a strap!). I am waiting to see one IRL (they haven't arrived in stores yet) but it's on my wishlist (that is, if I don't ask for the PS1 clutch in white for my birthday)

    1. Hi Ema, I've read your blog, so I know you are a NYer as well. This post gave me a yen for the bag, so I checked out the Rockefeller Center store after work, and they had a couple of the minis in straw on display. I didn't see the larger size in straw, just the leather. You should check it out!

  18. Hi Ema, I think it is genius for this reason as well. I had a JCrew straw bag that was quite old but it had an open top and wasn't very practical, but I love the look of a straw bag in July and August, it really says summer.
I almost didn't want to like this as I have gone crazy for JCrew bags this year, but I returned a skirt and a chambray top that I thought I had "needed" so I could keep this, more on the skirt thing tomorrow!

  19. I really like the shape of the Brompton bags and using nylon is a great idea, it should last forever. Bonus that it can be securely closed too. I usually stick with leather in the summer and just use light or brightly-colored bags. I do have a madras clutch from J.Crew that is a few years old but I haven't used it for a few summers now. I tend to avoid straw or rattan bags myself because they remind me of fishing creel and cleaning fish on a hot summer day.

  20. As always, if it is on my list you will eventually review it! Thanks for reviewing, I am off to order it too.

  21. Great review! Years ago I had an actual straw tote from Eddie Bauer, loved it to pieces, literally. Haven't found one yet to replace it, memory of straw bits stuck to my sweaters clung to my mind. JC's nylon version is pretty clever. Will see if I can check it out the next time I'm in store. Thanks for sharing!
