|Rafaella Dress from J Crew with Brora cropped cardigans.|
For spring and summer my story was red, white and blue, there were bits of print in there but the base of the story was in solid color. As we moved into the real heat of the summer I added in some white and bits of gold accessories, but the base remained the same.
I think the idea of building a Color Story around a print is that the print has to be one that you really love. Prints can be difficult and we all have our preferences. I like prints that are slightly antique, whimsical and maybe even a little silly, as long as the colors ground the print and give way to plenty of options as far as sweaters, coats and shoes are concerned.
The print in question is on a cotton velvet, it is the Rafaella Dress, J Crew Fall 2007.
The dress is 5 years old but new to me, I found it on ebay in the late spring.
In my Brora Treasure Chest I had 3 cropped cashmere cardigans to wear with the dress (which is strapless and so for me absolutely has to be worn with a sweater).

I wore loads of gray, black and forest green last winter and I don't want to look at those things this year. This is the benefit I guess of having a large storage closet with a clothing collection: when you tire of one Color Story you can switch in another quite effortlessly. Most of the items in this color-saturated story were already in my cupboard, with the exception of some items I found in the Brora sale.

J Crew issued these boots 3 years ago and I owned them in the tan and the black. I wore them like crazy but in the end the soft leather stretched out and they became too big for my feet. I gave them to my friend Jules and she wears them still.
The current version uses a different leather with a slightly pebbled texture, the fit is narrower which suits the shape of my foot, and I like that the heel is slightly higher.
The best thing about these boots is the perfect dark brown shade of the leather.
I tried on a few of my pieces for fall to show you how I'll be wearing them.

In the past I have even resorted to leg-warmers if you can believe it.
It's difficult for me to get too riled up over corduroy trouser outfits yet I like the simplicity of it. I have been inspired by our friend Tabitha. Tabs wears a uniform of corduroy trousers and a pea coat during the colder months (which for her, in Scotland, is apparently all year round!)

Navy with bits of brown.
I'll be wearing my summer navy with bits of brown as we head into fall.
