I've been reading Anne of Green Gables out loud to my daughter these last couple of weeks and we are having so much fun with it.
I'll be packing it up today as we are about to leave on a longer holiday, we'll finish it next week but Anne will stay with us as will her wonder with the world.
"All things great are wound up with all things little."
L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
Did you read Anne as a child?
I hope you have a brilliant week!
xoDani
I loved Anne as a child and it is one my daughter's favorites. We read first two books and she wants to read more (I noticed she got surprisingly quite interested in Anne and Gilbert's romance). We also read it out loud because even if she is a pretty good reader this books sentence structure and vocabulary is a little more difficult. But ever since we read it, my daughter's first choices of words to describe herself are 'Creative' and 'With big scope of imagination' and her friends are 'Kindred Spirits', isn't it funny?
ReplyDeleteHi ajc, I think it is a great book for reading out loud because of the vocabulary and the large amount of dialogue. I have a good east coast accent from living out there for a few years, so it's fun to put that on too!
DeleteI love that a classic book can have such an influence on our girls!
What a wonderful series to share with your daughter, Dani! I'm sure she will remember these special times with you for many years to come. :)
ReplyDeleteHave a fantastic time on your trip!
Thanks FFM. I hope you and your family are keeping well! :)
DeleteThat is so nice, I'm sure your daughter's imagination was vividly playing the story as you read. I did not read Ann of Green Gables as a child but if I have a daughter I will certainly read it to her.
ReplyDeleteBTW, did you pick up anything at the Brora sale? I bought a couple of cashmere blankets, one to keep and one to give as a gift. They are divine! I dawdled and missed them in January so was waiting for the July sale and I'm very pleased to have them now. Thank you for the Brora introduction Dani! Enjoy your holiday.
Hi xoxo, I think you would really like Anne!
DeleteOh the restraint I have shown, I did not shop the Brora sale. I love their items and those cashmere blankets are so dreamy. What a wonderful gift that will be!
I am thinking of adding in some Brora tweed this fall. I have a tweed skirt suit from Brora that is about 3 years old now, I would like one in some brown tones to complement my other things for fall. We'll see what they come up with!
I adore the Anne Books,I think they're brilliant stories written by a very clever woman. I loved her Emily series as well. I've also read the 6 volumes of L M Montomery's Selected Journals and they are a fascinating read. So yes, I guess you could say I'm a fan! have a great holiday!
ReplyDeleteHi Sulky Kitten, Well it seems you are a massive fan and thanks for the tip re the journals. I was looking at those at the library yesterday, I'm putting them on my list!
DeleteI love Anne of Green Gables! I read them as a child and this Christmas we gave my 8 year old her first Anne Book. My when I was young my friends and I would always talk about finding our Gilbert and not our Fred. Gilbert was our gold standard for men. I was lucky to have found my Gilbert!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read the journals, I didn't know about them--thanks Sulky Kitten!
Hi Dorothy, Will you read Anne again, out loud, to your daughter? Another fan and this confirms we are kindred spirits! :)
DeleteDani,
DeleteI think that we must be kindred spirits! I keep finding my self reading your posts and thinking "me too"! Yes, Anne of Green Gables is next on our list once the Iliad is finished! Have you read Happy Holisters to your daughter? We just finished that a few days ago. Great read aloud because the chapters always end w/ a cliff hanger.
We read them to both our daughters, and also loved the television series.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue, I bought the series on DVD and have promised my daughter we will watch it when we finish the book. I can't wait!
DeleteLove the whole series - and as you know, my new blog is named after an Anne quote. These books were magic for me and my daughter! You will have to bring her to PEI now!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful vacation, Dani!
Hi WMM, We are thinking of renting a cottage on PEI next summer, I've just started looking. Guess who we'll be stopping in to see on the way? :)
DeleteAwesome! Son just became a vegetarian, I will treat you really well!
DeleteEnjoy your vacation Dani!
ReplyDeleteMy daughters love the book.
Hi Ina, Thanks so much!
DeleteI read all the Anne books in the series and did so in one summer!
ReplyDeleteOur grown daughter loves Anne as well and watches the series on DVD often.
Mother was the one who got me hooked on the series and it is nice to hear that you and
your daughter are continuing the tradition!
Hi Hostess, I am not surprised your Mother gave you this gift, she is lovely isn't she!
DeleteI had a boxed set of Anne of Green Gables books and would you believe it, I never read a single one. Shoot, I just read The Secret Garden a few weeks ago - I'm behind on my "vintage" YA reading!
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa, Read them now, they are perfect for summer! :)
DeleteI never read the books but have visited the house in PEI and have seen the musical in Charlottetown - I remember I cried buckets at the end for some reason.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time on your holidays!
Hi Patricia, Everything makes me cry, we watched "Mirror-Mirror" yesterday and I cried at the end, what is wrong with me?
DeleteThanks very much!
Me too! It all started when the children were born. It can get downright embarrassing sometimes!
DeleteDani, I just knew when the title of your post came up that you were talking about "Anne of Green Gables"! I love the books and the mini-series. I mean, I love it as one of my all-time favorite things. I'm glad you are sharing it with your daughter, and have a great trip!
ReplyDeleteHi anthronewbie, Thanks so much!
DeleteI've been interested in the works of L.M. Montgomery as she is in my "family tree" of relatives on my maternal grandfather's side. Lovely stories that I've collected in antique/vintage versions.
ReplyDeleteHi itztru, How exciting! Have you been to PEI?
DeleteSadly, not yet. Both PEI and Nova Scotia are on the bucket list.
DeleteI don't remember reading Anne growing up. I do remember reading The Secret Garden though and I read aloud to my little sister and brother all the time-the Anatole series, Tasha Tudor books, Mark Twain stories, The Children's Bible. I think I was more interested in biographies(the color coded ones at my school library) and then in the summer I would get out an old box filled with all my dad's hand me downs, Treasure Island, Gulliver's Travels and The Hardy Boys. I read Gone With The Wind when I was nine, my aunt had taken me to see movie with my cousins and it fascinated me. After that I really didn't read much fiction(except mysteries, Nero Wolfe, et al) until required reading in high school. I hope your vacation is delightful Dani and travel safely.
ReplyDeleteHi David, What an interesting reader you were as a child! I also love The Secret Garden, and the Tasha Tudor books are some of my favorites.
DeleteThanks very much. I hope your summer is proving fun and relaxing. :)
I DON'T KNOW WHAT LIES AROUND THE BEND< BUT I AM GOING TO BELIEVE THE BEST DOES. I still have my grandma's copy of "Anne's House of Dreams" which she used to read under the covers to her little sisters. It is much dog-earred and a bit scribbled (by the naughty rascal sibs). I am with the earlier Anne on other stones vs. diamonds, and in my family doing something silly is internally known as a "Rollings Reliable" (the baking powder tale Diana sent in on Anne's behalf.) How fun to read aloud! Enjoy rest of your mother-daughter time and another happy hols Dani!
ReplyDeleteHi GetFresh, Thanks so much, Anne is so inspirational isn't she? She sees the best in people unless they call her "carrots", and then no-one can hold a grudge like Anne!
DeleteOh, I just adored (and still do) Anne. The series was one of my favorites as a girl, and I still re-read it now and again. My mom and I both own and love to watch the movies as well. I highly recommend them after you've finished reading the books together. What wonderful memories daughter will cherish. I was just thinking about The Secret Garden as well the other day (after catching a glimpse of Liesel Pritzker on Airforce One). One of my all-time favorites as well (and also a magical movie). Have a fantastic vacation! :)
ReplyDeleteHi M, Thanks very much. It looks like the heat is breaking today too. I will be ironing my Lilah dress and packing it up for our holiday, that dress always reminds me of you, thanks for recommending it, it's a favorite!
DeleteYou love Anne as well: kindred spirit!
I don't remember reading Anne, my best friend in 6th grade was addicted to The Secret Garden and would recite pages, chapters, from memory while I thought up alternative endings, e.g., Colin grows wings, the parents aren't all that dead...
ReplyDeleteSo when I was 10 or 11, I still loved Beezus and Ramona and all their friends. They were real people and had real parents, and the big sister got irritated with the little sister. Nuff said.
Hi Fred, I think you would love Anne! Read the books they are perfect for summer!
DeleteI've enjoyed reading your blog and I have awarded you the One Lovely Blog Award. Please visit my blog to receive it! http://beachchicstyle.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteHi Beach Chic Girl, Thanks so much that is kind!
DeleteI did not get to read Anne as a child, maybe it's not too late to do so now.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful time on your holiday!
Hi Tiffany Rose, It's definitely not too late, I highly recommend it.
DeleteThanks very much!
I really love Montgomery's books and short stories. Although I like Anne of Green Gables, Rilla of Ingleside (about Anne's youngest daughter), Emily's Quest and the Blue Castle are my favorites of all her novels. I still reread some of her books occasionally.
ReplyDeleteI did not read any of the classic girls' books as a child and am just discovering them now with my 7 year old daughter. We just finished A Little Princess, and also the more recent Winn-Dixie. Love these books, and will read to her as long as she will listen -- the head of my kids' lower school recently told me that when her daughter was applying to colleges, one of her application essays was about her relationship with her mother and how her mother's reading aloud to her, which continued until she left for college and happened whatever mood they were in, was the bond that always kept them close.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your holiday!
Sounds like a wonderful time for you and your daughter! Did you ever read the Betsy books by Maud Lovelace?
ReplyDeleteStill have all the "Anne of GG" books, we all love them. The Roald Dahl books-- " The BFG" and others are fun. My favorite book in the fourth/fifth grade though is out of print by Rumer Godden called "Miss Happiness and Miss Flower". This has everything-- 2 Japanese dolls, building a little house for them, a displaced from India cousin come to live in England and her conflict with her now sibling, a bookshop manned by Mr. Twilfit. I used to make the things from the book. I want to re-release it; have found copies on old book sites.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first post here, and I too love that book. I have a copy from my childhood. Ms G also wrote alot of other books, The Greengage Summer being one that springs to mind. I read somewhere that Demi Moore named her daughter after Ms Godden.
DeleteDani- I haven't , but surely will. I wonder if 9 years old boy would be interested?
ReplyDeleteLove the books, love the movies...wish I had read them, or had had them read to me as a young girl...you and your daughter are so fortunate to be able to share in Anne's delightfulness together!
ReplyDeletexo J~
I came late to Anne, since I didn't arrive in Canada till I was 12. But I thoroughly enjoyed the TV series, and I would encourage every young girl, Canadian or not, to pick up the books.
ReplyDeleteI've picked you for One Lovely Blog Award, posted on my blog tonight.
http://onetoomanyclosets.blogspot.ca/2012/07/road-trip-and-lovely-award.html
Thanks for your OOTDs and cooking posts!
I love reading classic older books with my daughter - plus they all have a bit of racism (in Anne of Green Gables -- the whole "we don't want anyone of our own kind" attitude at the start) and sexism. That inspires side conversations about how cultures and people and attitudes change and evolve. My daughter particularly likes to talk about how her group of friends now (white, olive, brown, black, asian, latino, etc) could not have been her group of friends then, how her parents wouldn't have the jobs we have now if we lived 50-200 years ago. I've held Anne's phrase "scope of imagination" with me for decades :)
ReplyDeleteHi Dani,
ReplyDeleteLove this post as my daughter devoured Anne. We went to the public library every Saturday and to this day see loves a good book. She'll remember this special time with you . So nice to slow it down in the summer and have them home. Of course by mid August I'm counting the days !
