J Crew Reviews, Petite Perspective

Navy Tweed Jacket

My sister popped by her local J. Crew store this week and she came away with some reviews for us, as well as a couple of items that she loved.
I'm always interested in Carolina's perspective as she is very petite: 4'10" and small-boned.  It is difficult for her to find clothes that fit her properly without massive amounts of tailoring.

She initially approached the store trip with the intent of buying the jacket, above.  It was not to be.  Her thoughts:

"The navy tweed jacket had promise and the 0 fit me well even in the sleeve but the interior large hook and eye closures do not hold for one second even with the garment off, and with it on I felt like I was wearing someone else's jacket. "

Boucle Peplum Jacket
"I did find two very good buys: the first of which was the "boucle" knit peplum zip up jacket in blue with an ivory almost space dye missoni pattern: the shot and description in catalogue are terrible because this is a nifty number. it is lightweight, very comfy, charming and can go over anything. Boucle usually means heavy-bulky-curly synthetic yarns.  Not so here.  Only strange things: the high price (149, really, for a little jacket? please) and the two way zipper on a peplum?!?"
Peter Pan Collar Tee
"The other is the sugary but surprisingly instantly loveable peter pan silk collar and cuffs gray heather " tee" which is really a sweater, and a nice medium cotton weight that hits at the hip. I was wearing my minnie pant and it looked perfect. I also tried it under the peplum and put the collar and cuffs over to fake a different look and it worked, you couldn't see the gray, so this top could work under a lot of things.  They also did it in black collar cuff on navy but the navy /black looked very heavy not delicate. "

Peter Pan Collar Tee in Navy/Black
They did a sort of open stitch ivory collar with a plain sleeve and gathers at the shoulders in wool or a blend that was cutesy but screamed cheap. i also can't wear puffy shoulders-little red riding hood attire really means hey freaks follow me!  Especially in a dark red!  Might as well wear that sweater and a target on my forehead!"

The elephant bracelet was way too big for Carolina.
"I also found your elephant bangle.  I loved it but it was huge on me. "

"There are two jewelry items I thought were great.  One is a row of oval, deep blue synthetic gemstones set in a dark gold-tone.  Simple but would be very elegant, I am keeping that one in mind as it was made shorter than the rest.  In person I like the medium blue with white stone patterned bracelet  (sort of a feathery chevron pattern, very 60s costume)."

Carolina found the fit great even though her wrists are tiny.
"There is also a large jewel encrusted elephant pendant necklace, he was about 2" high.  That is a swell piece!!"

Carolina thought it was swell!
Thanks for the reviews Sis.
Do you care for any of these items?
Have you checked out J. Crew's new arrivals today?

  4. SISTER ACT Dani, like KnitYarns I was chuckling ruefully at the puffy-sleeved sweater debacle. More than one JC sweater or dress, including the beloved 2007 peacock print, has been off limits due to too cute sleeves for me. If only Anne girl sleeves were in vogue for modern over 25-year-olds *sigh*. Big thanks to your guest blogger for the bracelet quality and fit comment as I also have "chicken bone" wrists and don't want to do costume jewellery PTTO.

  5. Must agree that we petite ladies should avoid the puffy sleeves! I enjoyed the perspective of someone who faces similar challenges as I do when shopping for clothes. Perhaps we could get a future guest post on other shops/brands your sister recommends for petite clothing?

    1. Hi Bitsy, I will certainly ask Carolina to do more guest reviews for us, she has great luck with vintage clothing which is often quite petite.

  6. Thanks to your sister for this, the only petite part about me is my wrists but it's good to read another viewpoint, my mum is now petite, she has shrunk so much, and we're having such a problem finding ranges to fit her, there seems to be less focus on it here than in the US.

    1. Hi Tabs, I can never believe how much my grandmothers have shrunk, my Grandma Jean always says "look I'm an elf now!"

  7. I really appreciate your sister's reviews. I'm not quite as petite, but find her perspective very helpful. I've been eying the peplum jacket. It's good to know that it fits well, but the price! I agree that it's too high.

I haven't even been considering any of the bracelets, as they are always too long. It's good to know I have a lovely option to consider; should it make it to sale price.

I hope she does more guest reviews in the future!

  8. We taller folk look silly with puffy sleeves too, mostly ,I think. The boucle jacket is cute, but peplums may not work for those with hips(me). Hope you had fun in Atlanta!

    1. Hi Lane, Oh yes I was in Atlanta a month ago, these reviews my sister sent me through email, I wanted to share as I find her hilarious!
No puffy sleeves for me either.

  9. So glad you had fun in Atlanta and that your sister had some shopping success. I have a couple of items on my radar from the new arrivals-but nothing that is on my "list". The peacoat popover and the tipped peacoat. My Old Navy peacoat is going into it's 3rd season and I paid $30 for it. Perhaps when the offer an outerwear promo I'll give one of the styles a try. Have a great weekend.

    2. Hi Julie, I am just getting used to Pinterest and it is great fun! Great to see you there as well!
Nothing on my list either, fall is done for me, I do have a winter list I'm building but I'm waiting a couple of months. Love those peacoats though.

  11. I'm petite as well, though not as tiny as your sister. I usually ignore J.Crew's bracelet options because I hate falling in love with a design and then being heart-broken when it gapes on my wrist. I like a snug bracelet right at my wrist bone, and it's very hard to find a 6-6.5" structured bangle. I will keep an eye out for that blue bracelet!

    1. Hi Keilexandra, I also have a tiny wrist but nothing like my sister, it's very hard for her to find bracelets.

  12. I also have a teeny sister - she could use one of my socks as a dress. I love the Peter Pan, but it would look better on someone less bosomy than myself. Thanks to your sister for her JC assessment.

  14. mini sis here-thanks to everyone for your encouraging comments! Encouraging because it reminds me that I am not the only petite shopper out here wading through seas of mixed up sizes and jewelry sized for women who made it far past my height after the age of 11! I would like to quickly address a few well-made comments: First, the blue oval gemstone bracelet, linked in the classic style, was in the store but not online, which I cannot explain, but it resembles "Martha's Bracelet," a similar number in rhinestone. It looked better for us small wrist types. The photo DaniBP showed on the blog does also look smaller and is classic late 50s American costume design (I am writing a book on iconic fashion in classic film and the best vintage dealers, so I obsess over these things!). On the peter pan collar, I did worry it would be too little girly on me but the collar is very small and nicely made so it makes the top a nice switch from a t-shirt which is exactly what I wanted. i agree that the puffed sleeve looks good on very few, petite or tall, unless you are going to go punk rock with it or maybe on a rockabilly dress! On the peplum jacket I saw the photo my sis posted which was not the catalogue shot I saw, and it shows it hitting at highest waist. Peplums traditionally hit lower at the waist, the peplum meant to flatter your natural curve (think 40s suits). If you're not sure about it try it on in a store or an easy return option!

    2. Carolina, cheers for the bracelet clarification. I admire much of JC's costume, including some of the past collaborations. But much of it is too big for me, except for the elasticated cheapie bracelets (not a fan). Best with the book! And more guest posts from the peach state if you please...

  15. Thanks for the review! I am not petite but it is still interesting (and entertaining!) to read another perspective. And you have shown me an item I haven't seen before, the blue Marquess Fleur Bracelet. Did you find it hard to put on? I lose patience with some of those clasps but this bracelet is so pretty I'd give it a try.

I also love love that bracelet. Good thing it's not my Color Story for fall or I'd be tempted.
