Ebony and Ivory

Do you remember that catchy tune, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney it was, "ebony and ivory living in perfect harmony..."  I loved that song.
I was flipping through my new Vogue magazine yesterday and I noticed there was a fashion feature on black and white, it was very graphic with piping and a sort of retro-modern look a la 1995.  You know what I'm talking about.
Black and ivory is winter's answer to the classic black and white wardrobe.  Here are some picks of mine from the J Crew site.  The big sale starts there today, a 25% reduction on your entire purchase.

Lovely to contemplate a reduced color palette isn't it!

I'm off to the Beauty Shop today and goodness knows I need it.
What are you up to?
Are you finished with your Christmas shopping as I am or just beginning?
Will you be shopping the sales this week?
Wearing black with ivory?
Tell all!

  1. I found my New Year's outfit - there's a black tee at Anthro with white rabbits all over it, and I'll wear winter white cords! Rabbits are good luck, right?

    1. Fred rabbits are definitely good luck and also cute, you can't go wrong!
I saw that tee it's adorable but also has a nice line to it.

  2. I love black and white but always pair other colors with ivory for some reason. I love your picks, the beaded jacket reminds me of your Supperclub dress, very festive. I have a shearling tucker and trapper hat from years ago and they are fabulous. Very warm and cozy.

We are attending a cocktail party this evening and I've booked a mani/pedi, not a moment too soon. It really is wonderful to have a bit of pampering, especially when it's overdue. So refreshing. Christmas shopping is finished with the exception of one gift card that I will pick up soon. Boring gift but it's what they want so of course that is what they will get. I'm tempted by the J.Crew sale with 3 items in my cart but now that it is here I am deliberating. Typical.

    1. xoxo, that jacket also reminds me of the Supperclub dress which I will definitely be wearing this season. I am embracing beauty shop appointments more and more to keep away the crypt-keeper: cut AND color every 4 weeks, facial every 8 weeks.
I am not tempted by the sale after my last sale box, as you know I returned everything. It's good, I don't need anything and all of my money is going towards bathrooms anyway!

  3. I like your choices here Dani, especially the shoes, and little fur tippets. I think that ivory is a softer option than white. I have barely started my Christmas shopping, and need to get cracking - I wish I was one of those people who begin in January of each year! Maybe next year.

    1. Sulky this year I decided to get it all done in November, it has worked a charm. Now I'm done and I can sit around and look at the wrapped packages. I didn't buy much this year anyway, our Rascals had travel treats in 2012 after all.
I love those fur neck things, if I had one I could pretend to be Sulky Kitten, I'd even drink gin!

  4. Thanks DBP, feeling very timely since my JC Shimmy dress (the organza sheath with little horizontal ruffles and the black sash) will finally make its debut this holiday season. Got it on EBay for a pittance way back in 2009 but it's short on even me, so personally will only wear with black tights.
Also loving those collars as you know. But I'm doin' a Nan's remake for "good" and then maybe the cheapie Factory version for weekend fun, as personally can't justify that cheddar for shearling. (The hubs comes from Wales and would not let that one get past him.)
Christmas goodies long done since I have to post half of them and generally don't deal well with the mall. But still have cards and baking left to tackle.

    1. GF I love that dress, I did own it but gave it up, it was just too short on me, it was don't-bend-over short!
Those collars are fab but ridiculous prices of course, it's J Crew that's how they roll these days.

The mall gives me a panic attack this time of year, it was online or boutique shopping for me.

    1. Ouf, Tabs $700 for the "twinkle" black jacket in a poly, acrylic etc. blend with no percentage count. CFS is using across pond Carlisle as justification, that and a hem chain weight.

    2. Tabs the prices are outrageous. I do love that long gown, so pretty. Inventing an outing for a long gown would be a job though!

  6. I like black with ivory and with camel. Sometimes white, although that can be very stark.

Not planning to bite on the 25% off. Nothing I need, and sadly nothing I want. I received the antique white pencil skirt after seeing it on the lovely Tabs. That's my ivory addition to the closet. Oddly it fit perfectly everywhere except the waist, which was about an inch too big. I had my tailor take it in, and while it was there I had her narrow the bottom a bit. I like pencil skirts to nip in a bit.

    Enjoy the salon break!

    1. DF your alterations sound lovely, what a good idea to nip in the hem as well. That will be gorgeous on you.
My salon break was just the thing, I was able to visit with my friend Jules and my hair looks much better.

  7. Hi Dani-Enjoy your salon appointment. Mine are next week for haircut and color and the next day a mani/pedi. I can't wait. I might bite on the tux blouse at J Crew. I've always wanted one. DVF is having 30% off sale and there is a temptation there as well. Shopping for my friends is done, but the kids and husband...not even started. I usually have a big box from amazon with all of their goodies, so I'm not stressed-yet.

    1. Eep. I hit the DVF sale. So much there I would buy if I had a bigger budget!

    2. Julie a tux blouse is so your style. DVF sale, is the dress available yet? Her stuff is so beautiful. DVF's Paris apartment is featured in this months InStyle, just read it at the beauty shop. It's on Saint Germain, I die!
My giant amazon box is upstairs, I just have to wrap it all one day next week.

  9. Hi Dani, I love your ebony and ivory picks. Do you remember those Linda Lundstrom coats, with the woollen liner and the nylon outer coat? I used to have one in ivory, with the lovely (faux)fur-lined hood.
Today I received the completed revised draft of my old professor's book - I have to carve out some time in the next few days to read it all at once instead of chapter by chapter. I also have to start thinking about our school's community Christmas dinner - I'm on the school council and we are expected to contribute baked goods. Nightmare.
    Enjoy your beauty treatments!

    1. Patricia I remember those coats, my friend Laura had one, they were so warm and beautiful. Are you editing this book or giving feedback? That sounds interesting, you must have been a treasured student.
Baked goods! Am wailing for you! Somehow those obligations take any fun out of baking.

    2. Dani, I was proof reading, plus I was able to alert him of some mistakes he had made regarding places in Budapest (the subject of the book was imprisoned there after the war). I don't think I was a particularly treasured student - I sent a postcard to him together with a friend when she visited me in Germany (she happened to have his address - don't ask!) and since then we have exchanged Christmas cards etc. It has been tough going at times because there is just so much history in the book - I had to keep looking things up!

  10. I love ebony with ivory, just love it. It is one of my favorite combo, I guess that's why I am falling hard for those Everly pumps. Great picks, I want one of those fur neck wraps but not at this price.

    1. ajc those Everly pumps are so gorgeous, you must keep them. Aren't those bonkers prices for those little neck wraps? I bought my fur wrap thing on ebay for $40. Ha, J Crew has gone mad with their pricing!

  11. Hi Dani - I just placed my own ebony and ivory order - DH will give me the zebra calf hair ballet flats for Christmas - so perfect with the kate spade clutch I will also receive on the big day!

I have a couple of little faux fur scarves I have gotten along the way at Le Chateau, Talbots and Michael Kors - am looking forward to digging them out. I will do my own pedi today - have been run ragged by estate stuff and a bit of christmas shopping and will hunker down and watch the lovely Americans have fun tomorrow!

    1. WMM those flats will be so perfect with your KS clutch. And a black dress! You will be a vision!
I really wish I was with my family in Georgia, my Dad is doing the big dinner tomorrow night, he's such a wonderful cook and also grumptastically hilarious, I miss him so.
Enjoy your pedi, my hair looks better X 8million!

    2. WMM of course losing your own Dear Dad has left me thinking of my own too, this holiday thing can be a challenge please take it easy.
I hope it is all going well with the estate as well, I know that can be stressful. And of course you have to deal with it when you're already exhausted. Rest up my friend!

A nice ivory sweater is hard to find. I had one from Brora but my daughter borrowed it a couple of years ago and I haven't worn it since. ;)

  13. I have been wearing this for so long... Only black, grey, white/ivory and a touch of read from time to time... I know play more with colors even on festive days. I still love very much black, it is very classy but I try to be similar with different tones for formal events. I am not finished with Xmas shopping but I already have started... I am somewhere in the middle... Take Care.

    1. Steph I still like black too, for daily uniform but also a black dress for going out... I have a section of black/white/ivory in my big closet, I like to see it all organized together.

  14. I love ivory and black, always felt it was more elegant than a stark white and black. Haven't even begun to shop for gifts...but our kids are grown, so we get them one large thing each, so it's not too difficult. And then just my husband and my mom. With the rest of the family we each pick one person to give something to, which works out well. That long dress is gorgeous, but no where to wear it - ever.

  15. Hi Dani! Black and Ivory (as well as Black and White) tops my list of favorite color combinations. It is such a classic, not to mention very elegant, too.

I am just starting my Christmas shopping this year, and do plan to take advantage of some of the sales this weekend to start picking up gifts for my boys.

I hope you enjoyed your time at the Beauty Parlour. I was just in last week and had my hair all cut off into a chin length bob again. (I am trying to grow my bangs out and this seemed one of the easiest ways to go about doing it. Once they get a little bit longer, I do plan to grow my hair out again though.)

  16. I really want a cream fisherman's sweater, but leaner and trimmed up so I don't look like I popped out of the 80's. I also want Winter White or cream pants/jeans, but I haven't found any I like yet. None of the JCrew combos have that "service staff" look to them (especially the gown!). Have to be careful of details!

Beauty Parlour! Love those words! The smartest thing I've done recently is pre-book my hair cut/colour appts. I'm going to do the same with facials this coming year. Your skin is gorgeous Dani and I'm sure those regular appts are part of the reason!

    Just starting the Christmas shopping...
