Old Tweedy Bird

J Crew navy tweed with vintage Liberty scarf.
As you are well and perhaps painfully aware I am mad for tweed skirt suits.
Listen, I'm not the only one.  I've been on a bit of a mission to collect a couple for spring and summer, now that most of the suits geared for those seasons are on sale.  I've lost a few on ebay which goes to show that there are other Old Tweedy Birds out there collecting skirt suits, imagining how to accessorize them, pairing them with layers of sweaters or plain blouses...
Navy tweed jacket.

Navy tweed skirt.

Look there's a matching shoe.
It is a lovely tweed perfect for summer.
For fit pictures please see the skirt suit on my gorgeous friend Ema.
My skirt is at the tailor and I'll tell you why.
It's too short, that's the bad news.  The good news is that there is a two inch hem to let down, as you can see below.
My vintage Liberty scarf has another new friend: a navy wool coat.
It is the stadium-cloth mod coat which you can see here.
Very large buttons.
It has enormous gold metal buttons which I quite fancy.  It fits well, and is a plain coat suitable for nearly any occasion.

The large pockets make it a good coat for daytime or for walking around: you can fit all manner of keys and coffee change in there.
Very large pockets.
The wool is thick and warm and if you pick it up on the sale as I did the price is fair.
I might wear it today, I'll be out and around doing some volunteer work.  It's not helping the families displaced by Sandy, the only way I can manage that is to donate through the American Red Cross.
I'm sure every bit helps.

What's on your agenda today?
xoDani

  1. Loving other Old Tweedy Birds out there! What luck to have a hem to take down, I checked all my other pencil skirts but they mitred the corners.

  2. I love the navy tweed suit and i probably would wear the jacket with dark denim skinnies. I have never tried anything with tweed(gasp).

Today its running errands, doctors visits and grocery shopping for me,which is not my favorite thing to do.My favorite part of the day will be kicking some butt(aka kickboxing).

    1. Hi Ina, I did kickboxing in my 20's and it is a great workout, wish I still had the stamina for it!

  3. I don't own any tweedy stuff at all Dani, but I like that suit. I love the navy coat - I have a thing for pockets and they are huge - large enough to carry all my doggy paraphernalia and other bits and bobs. I'd probably begin to resemble a pack mule after 20 minutes though.

    1. Nah sulky, you're too fun, fluffy and paws-itively funny to ever resemble a stubborn ole mule. Know what you mean about pocket bumps tho'. DH even worse, cramming hat and gloves in single parka pocket so looks like he has a hernia.

    2. Sulky I thought of the coat as dogwalker's dream.

  4. TWEEDLE DEE DBP. Imagining the jacket and shoes with dark black or navy-blue basics in between. Hurray for the hem. And fetching navy coat, which I think would be great on the taller than me (pockets in all wrong highlight spot for the short). Good on you for volunteering! Over here today's outing includes the library, cobbler and consignment store.

    1. Look at you - taking on serious if substantial heels. Hope they measure up *fingers crossed*

    2. GetFresh, I may try the heels, I ordered them on the sale but they are waitlisted. We'll see, it's hard to squeeze my heels in anything after wearing Chie Mihara!

  5. Hi Dani, thanks for the link and the compliment. Did the jacket work out? When you told me that you had ordered the skirt I thought it would be too short for you, I am glad that you can let the hem down. I was hoping to get a little bit more of wear out of it but it is suddenly very cold here so I think I am going to retire it until spring.

    1. Hi Ema, I won't be wearing this until the spring but I love it. The jacket is a bit big but I'm having it tailored as well, then it will be perfect. The big hem and the a-line shape mean the skirt can work for me, I'm always copying you!

  6. Dani,Love the suit and coat!Navy never goes out of style. Where does the skirt fall once the hem is let down?I would consider purchasing if not too short, you know old folks dont look appropriate in mini skirts! Glad to hear your house projects are wrapping up and cant wait to see the beautiful baths! Just in time for the holidays, plenty of time to clean up and prepare. Have a great day and for helping the devasted.I have a busy day, lots of raking, laundry ,groceries and cleaning. Not to exciting but I must catch up.

    1. Hi Anon, the skirt is still above knee with the hem down so leg-lifts continue *groan*
We are on a "bathroom break" one down one to go with 3 weeks off to clean up before the mess begins again. The first one looks beautiful, I plan to take pics on a sunny day.

  7. Hi Dani, your newest tweed suit is lovely - you are lucky it's got a nice hem to let down though. Also love the coat - navy is a favourite of mine - especially the lining.
Today I will prep our bedroom for painting - it took a while to choose the wall colour. All the furniture is in the middle of the room so there's just enough space to work. This will take me most of the week, but I quite enjoy it once I get into the groove.
    Enjoy your day!

  8. I don't own any tweedy stuff either (Chanel type tweed) - it reminds my husband of his mother (not in a good way, and btw, it's a long list of what I don't wear because of her.) I would like to find at some point a blazer out of a men's type tweed, can you visualize the difference, sort of British tweed as opposed to French tweed? Did you buy the tweed shoes too? Love them and the suit. Going to be painting today, and seeing Leonard Cohen in concert tonight. Did you know he was Poet Laureate of Canada twice?
Going to be in the 90's all this week in LA. I give up, don't know what to wear anymore.

    1. Kathy, there's a great shop in Edinburgh for that sort of thing, reasonable prices and excellent range of tweeds, they even do a 'couture' service. I'll be posting on them next week, they haven't really geared up their online site yet but are sending me product pics.

    2. Kathy, I am coughing up a hairball trying to imagine David's list of sartorial No-no's for you!! You'll have to tell me - or I'll make it up and have to be forced back into my straitjacket.

    3. Tabitha - can't wait for the post, and the visit. Oh man Sulky, you have no idea. Go ahead and make it up - would love to know your guesses, and promise to answer them.

    4. Kathy Leonard Cohen is a cultural hero here, well-loved and even revered. I bet the concert was excellent. Hope you had fun!
I want to see the list done by Sulky and confirmed by you!

  9. I love the tweed suit for you Dani, and I think that shorter skirt will make it more wearable and not so serious. You have great legs and with tights and letting down the hem it will be totally ladylike and Daniworthy :)
I love the coat and I would have contemplated it if not that I already have a navy coat I am very happy with. You will love the stadium fabric for the colder days, I find my Boulevard coat very warm and I only need to wear my down puffer when it falls blow 20F.

    1. Hi ajc, The stadium cloth is VERY warm, I love it. I'm trying to avoid my puffer this year, we'll see. Dressing like the Michelin Man is not very exciting!

  10. I'm sure you'll love your new suit. I adore the coat, but never saw it IRL to get an idea of fabric or fit. It is such a pretty style!
I have an old birdseed tweed suit that I love because it has a very retro longish swing jacket over a pencil skirt. The suit together rarely sees the light of day, but I will wear it as separates through fall.
Today I'm off to take my mom shopping for her outfit for Rocket Arm's Bar Mitzvah. Then errands, a conference call and laundry-never a dull moment.

    1. Julie you are so busy, I hope the shopping trip went well. I like shopping with my Dad because he's grumptastic and points out how crappy everything is. I haven't shopped with my mother since I was a little girl and I can't imagine it.
Your tweed suit sounds fabulous! I want to see it!

  11. Dani Love the tweed suit, however I really love the navy coat. How do you think it would look on a larger women?

    1. Hi Anon, I think it would look great on a larger woman. It has a nice fit around the shoulders and seems roomy through the bust, the buttons are a great detail and those pockets are so handy. Give it a try! I took my regular size and can wear it with a sweater underneath, I'd say it runs true.

  12. Hi Dani, I am sure the tweed suit will look fabulous on you. I confess, I don't own any tweed at the moment. I do love that mod coat, and I am sorely tempted but I can't justify it as I have the navy stadium cloth elements coat from last year...must stick to my one-in, one-out rule!

Hope your Monday is going swimmingly!

  14. Dani, you are the ultimate Tweedy Bird! I love the suit with the Liberty scarf, so elegant and understated. Since moving to Canada my appreciation for tweed has really grown and why not when you can wear it 8 months of the year? The coat looks so cozy and a little bit retro with the big patch pockets and gold buttons.

    1. xoxo that's the thing we get loads of wear out of stuff like this, that's how I justify being an Old Tweedy Bird. I think they are classics, they're not really in style so can't go out.

  15. Navy tweed is so classic; I didn't like the little gold threads at the B&M, but looks good on people. The coat looks like a keeper, especially with the scarf. Tonight will be our first hard freeze -- much warmer here at the coast-- so I am going to dig out the gloves and warmer scarves.

    1. Hi Lane, We are into the freeze as well, stay warm, I'm really worried for the people who can't go home and now it's so cold too.

  17. Love the suit! If I was teeny tiny like you I would be all over that! Very dani-like! It is freezing here today so am glad you have a warm coat. I was wearing my icon trench and honestly, I thought I was going to freeze to death!

  18. Would love to see it on you - please post piccies. Just took five dresses to the drycleaners to let down and one of them has almost nothing to let down. What is that all about? Might have to give it to my sister blister who has younger legs than me. That vintage scarf is fabulous.

      Found that scarf on ebay!

  19. Oooh, I love the navy tweed Dani! I ended up buying the jacket and pants. Great idea to let the hem down on your skirt for extra length. And the Liberty scarf is perfect with your navy pieces.

  20. Oh, I DO Love tweed and that is why I love winter, so I can wear tweed all the time! Your skirt is lovely and I find that today, skirts are very often too short for my taste! Knee level is the shortest I agree to wear. Your coat is also lovely... Take Care.

    1. Hi Steph, I know what do we have to do to get knee length skirts these days?! Big hems are good but rare. I hope you are well and staying warm.

  21. The scarf is gorgeous with the tweed and the coat. I am so drawn to navy this year as I've never been before. As soon as the weather cools enough, I'm breaking out my navy lattice-weave cotton crepe coat. I am a tweedy bird and have the jacket and skirt but didn't get the skirt. Now knowing there's length to be let down, maybe I should, I really like this tweed.

I got the confetti tweed jacket and for that one, I bought the mini three sizes bigger in order to get some length, lol.

Kudos to you that you're doing some volunteer work!

    1. Hi Tiffany Rose, get the skirt! I also love this tweed, and I really liked the confetti but the skirt was so short on me, I didn't check the hem I think I should have!
It was very easy volunteer work for my daughter's school, I don't do much of that anymore so kudos are not deserved! I'm looking for a new volunteer job, I think I'll do something through my church, they help so many people.

    2. I'll try to find the skirt. I'm sure you understood but i meant I have the jacket and pants ... late night/early morning incoherence!

I will check the hem of the confetti, even 3 sizes up was still a tad short for my taste, I was counting on it riding low and that kind of works.

I need to find a church closer to where I live. I used to be so active but had to move far away ...

  22. Very pretty Dani. Gotta love the navy blue this year as I find it flattering as I'm getting older. I'm also a tweedy bird as half my closet is tweeds. Put that tweed suit on and we'll go to the Empress for tea.
Received the K.S. leopard dress yesterday and it's gorgeous. You must have been swimming in the top because it was huge up top and I have a bust line.Eighty dollars later I've decided my kid's should skip university and get into sewing!
