| Red gloves. |
I think
red is having a bit of a moment, and not just because of the Taylor Swift song that is on constant rotation in my brain these days.
Santa red, holiday red, fire red: the color is winter's antidote, a cheering happiness which promises warmth and comfort.
Here are a few of my best red moments from 2012.
 |
| The red chairs on the dock at Geneva on the Lake, New York. |
 |
| The menu from Cafe Mollien at the Louvre. |
 |
| Jackie in her perfect red dress. |
 |
| Red sachet in the kitchen. |
 |
| Red cedar canoe at Berna's cottage. |
 |
| A glimpse inside a cafe, Paris. |
 |
My strawberry pin cushion.
Humble red. |
How do you feel about red these days?
Do you like a red dress or does it bring to mind "The Handmaid's Tale"?
Hope you are having a cheerful day.
xoDani
I havent really warmed to wearing red,but i love it for decoration my house and in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteWhat Ina, no red gingham shirt? :-)
DeleteIna I can also see you in red gingham!
DeleteI love red especially in shoes, gloves and bags ; I'm so depressed when I take the tube in the morning and see everybody wearing black! You've just got to avoid the Nancy-Reagan-dressed-as-Santa all-red look !
ReplyDeleteThe SIlver Bunny: thank you for reminding me that black black is so depressing. Agreed no NR head to toe though she pulled it off like everything else she ever wore!
DeleteI adore red but finding the perfect shade can be daunting. My eye prefers a true holiday red or raspberry with blue undertones. Finding the perfect red dress has been a goal for years, but with orange/red as a trend color the berry shades are harder to find. I have seen some blue/red for spring and I can't wait.
ReplyDeleteHi Julie, I love red in summer too and I have bits here and there in my red-white-blue closet. So true that modern red is not a kind color to wear, the orange cast is difficult.
DeleteI also find red tricky and normally shy away, but I just bought Lands End red checked and red striped thermal pajama bottoms (or sleep pants as they call them), which definitely make me feel cheery. Now I'm yearning for some red leather gloves . . .
ReplyDeleteDN in NYC
Hi DN! My red gloves are from J Crew, 2010 or 2011. Those jammies do sound cheery, they'll be perfect for being at home during the holidays!
DeleteI, too, like splashes of red - there are some in our family room: in a group of paintings on the wall, in some glass candle holders and some cushions. Those red gloves are great - my go-to for leather gloves is Winners, but only if Made in Italy and cashmere-lined; no luck yet in finding red though.
ReplyDeletePatricia I think it is so true in art that a red detail is so essential for interest and harmony, loving the idea of the red accents in your family room. Our family room is painted red with a red Persian on the floor, it is so cozy.
DeleteThose Italian gloves are so nice. Better than the JC which are made in China.
What lovely memories from the year.
ReplyDeleteAs a brunette I love a red dress, I think my mum bought me a red party dress once a year when I was young, so for along time I fought against it but I have embraced it again.
I have memory of a single dress from my childhood and it was a silk chiffon number with a full twirly skirt in true red. I loved that dress and still do.
DeleteTabs I really liked that red dress on you, it is a great color on a brunette so true. More brilliance from your Mum that she bought you a red dress each year!
DeleteThat little pin cushion is so cute. I love flashes of red, especially in shoes. It's the only time I really play with colour. I am now hankering after a snuggly bright red scarf to cheer up all these grey, rainy, windswept days.
ReplyDeleteSulky a scarf is a no-guilt purchase especially the snuggly kind (Hermes another thing).
DeleteI like red but I rarely wear it in fall and winter, it draws attention to my skin and I fear the crypt-keeper complexion is coming as it is!
Red is my favorite color. I have a red wall in my great room, red geraniums outside and even a red frying pan hanging from my pot rack. Until this year I had no red clothes. I purchased red shoes, a watch with a red leather band and recently a red DVF dress. I love all those pieces and since my wardrobe is mainly neutrals, red adds a lot to my outfits.
ReplyDeleteDesert Flower, with you, I think every grown-up lady should have some kind of red shoe to click heels, dance (at least on the inside) and channel her inner Dorothy.
DeleteDF your red pieces in wardrobe and otherwise sound perfect. I wish you had a blog so you could show us!
DeletePoly?! Honestly, what's with J.Crew's race to the bottom?
ReplyDeleteI have exactly one red chair and one red floor cushion in my house. It's a powerful color and should be respected. Unless you're going whole hog a la Diana Vreeland, then by all means.
Raina I don't know either but they are racing and winning, way to go guys!
DeleteI knew you'd have a bit of red in your house.
How nice to reminisce on the summer and vacation moments. I love red this time of year, especially in patterns. I only own a few red pieces but they are so cheery and festive in winter.
ReplyDeleteHi xoxo, It's interesting looking at the colors that caught my eye while on holiday this year!
DeleteI've always loved true reds. Properly done, red can be a great basic, too, as well as a delightful accent color.
ReplyDeleteHi Fred, yes properly done being the key, why didn't J Crew make that "Collection" dress in a wool with a nice silk lining?
DeleteLove seeing those moments throughout the year! I adore red, though I don't have a ton of it in my wardrobe. I'm not sure why, as it's quite flattering for blondes. I have been slowly adding several red pieces, and would love to find the perfect red dress.
ReplyDeleteM I'm so jealous that you can wear these pinks and reds and they look fabulous on you with your gorgeous hair!
DeleteI love red and have a desire for a red dress, but in reality, I have no where to wear it. I have a small red Chloe cross body bag that I love, and I think that may be it for red in my wardrobe. I would love a red coat, but I live in LA and already have too many coats, so again, probably not going to happen. But Dani, you'd get a lot of wear out of a great LRD.
ReplyDeleteKathy I'm looking but it has to be good. If you ever see a great LRD let me know!
DeleteUntil recently I hardly had any reds in my closet although I always loved red accents for my home. But in the last couple of years I added several red items. I just bought the J.Crew wool pencil skirt in deep poppy which is true medium red. I am debating if I should keep since I have one in persimmon but I am tempted since it is true red as opposed to orange.
ReplyDeleteajc keep it, if it is a true red it has longevity in your closet!
Deletei love red! not thrilled with my house being red but i can live with it apparently. i love the photo of berna's canoe!
ReplyDeletei see your blog has turned into an adoption agency for tabs. too funny.
xo
I love your red house - it's perfection.
DeleteJanet yes we're all sending our rascals over to Tabitha's Scottish Finishing School!
DeleteYou would love that canoe, handmade, cedar. Our son actually apprenticed with the canoe builder one summer when he was up at camp. They are Hurley canoes, famous in Muskoka/Algonquin.
Well we are sisters! I am just writing a post on red myself!
ReplyDeleteI love red! Red makes me happy. Red! I was wearing my red coat with my red plaid christmas scarf and red gloves today and I was so happy!
I loved Jackie in her red!
You would have looked awesome in that dress!
WMM sister we love red and need to find the perfect LRD!
DeleteWasn't Jackie so beautiful.
I also love red, but usually only wear it in small doses. I have a red handbag which is one of my favorites, and recently purchased a red jacket from Zara (the one that Duchess Kate owns) that I really love, too.
ReplyDeleteLove your pin cushion...so adorable!
Hi FFM, I have to say that pincushion makes sewing tolerable!
DeleteI'd love to see your jacket, I bet it's beautiful.
RED LETTER DAYS Jackie was always so simply perfect and timeless. You know I have crushes on your pincushion (the un-Martha in me), Berna's canoe (Muskoka Time) and your sachet ("Molly" craves). I have never had a red handbag, but if I ever find the elusive right colour, quality and shape it will find room in the collection. I have a grey coat that "needs" one. In the meantime I will content myself with my daily reds - a Cuisinart mini prep, oven mitts and Tabasco sauce.
ReplyDeleteOh and that JC dress reminds me of a childhood song, "one of these things is not like the others...(quality, enduring construction.)
DeleteGF I often think of that song, and what a disappointment that dress was. The images of your daily reds brings a big smile!
DeleteRed is definitely a color that comes and goes for me. As for right now? Oh, it's on!
ReplyDeleteEleanor, it must be the zeitgeist, we are all finding it attractive right now!
DeleteThough I've been wearing a lot of navy blue lately, red is my favorite color. I have the same red gloves and guess what just showed up at my doorsteps today, a pair of Boden sixties heels in bright red. I love red especially for the holiday season.
ReplyDeleteTiffany I want to see your new red shoes! Please show us!!
DeleteDani, I wore the shoes today and gosh I love them! I will post soon, they made me feel like Dorothy.
DeleteI love all the photos that you posted and I was also disappointed to see that dress from J. Crew was all polyester - what a disappointment! I love splashes of red, especially in the winter time. These days I have been wearing a red wool/cotton blend cardigan from Joe Fresh over my black & white gingham shirt. It's a combination that cheers me up.
ReplyDeleteLouise wasn't that a kicker? I couldn't believe it, why bother J Crew?
DeleteLove the image of your sweater/gingham shirt.
Lately I am loving a deep rich red. Both in decor and fashion it just feels right!
ReplyDeletexoxo

Hi Karen, A bordeaux red is making the rounds now too!
DeleteHi Dani - just popping in again to give you a link to an article in The Guardian:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.guardian.co.uk/fashion/2012/dec/04/chanel-franco-scottish-affair-tweed
about Chanel's links to Scotland. V. interesting, I think you'll enjoy it.
Patricia thank you! I will go check that out!
DeleteI love red... I wear less red those days, but I love it very much... and all the colors I associate with red, orange, pink, purple... I just love them... May be this is why I love so much this time of the year...
ReplyDeleteHi Steph, I remember that you incorporate a lot of red into your regular wardrobe, yes this is your season!
DeleteI've always loved to wear a deep red sweater in the winter - cashmere, if possible. And it's always festive!
ReplyDeleteWhenever I think of "red" in the context of music, I always think of Okkervil River - "Red" from the album Don't Fall in Love with Everyone That You See. I think you might like it.
Sophia, first of all I love your sweater! And thank you for the recommendation, I will seek that out.
DeleteBerna's canoe is the best.
ReplyDeleteI have true red suede loafers I sometimes wear with navy or grey trousers. The modern red origami dress is going to a party tomorrow night.
Dani, I can't recall you in any red.
Hi Lane, I know I don't wear much of it, you're right!
DeleteHave fun in your origami dress!
Thanks for the comments, I'll be back later to respond properly, I'm taking my car in for its winter tire add-on, we've a beautiful light snowfall here today so it is very appropriate!
ReplyDeleteRED SUEDE SHOES Dani, popping back to post an appropriate pair of Chies, on display at Toronto's new outpost of Gravity Pope.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.torontolife.com/daily/style/shop-talk/2012/11/29/introducing-gravity-pope/attachment/nov12-gravity-pope-05/
Snow trying hard to fall here now.
GF okay I have some red suede Chie's I'll have to haul them out, I never wear them!
DeleteI feel red is best in accessories, especially gloves or a bag in the winter. It adds a punch of colour without being over-the-top. You might want to check out old clips of Ali McGraw's red dress in Love Story. Apparently some style mavens consider it one of the best red garments of all time. It is lovely, especially against her raven hair.
ReplyDeleteCarol I must do some detective work on this red dress from Love Story. Thanks so much for letting me know!
DeleteLOVE red. I just found a gorgeous red dress with a zebra belt at the fancy consignment shop. Only drawback is that it's sleeveless (do the designers know any women with office jobs? we do not go to work without sleeves), but I also found a great black jacket to go with. I would wear it to work every day but then people might talk.
ReplyDeleteThe Gold Digger: People would talk mark my words! ;) Ooh it sounds so nice.
DeleteI have a lot of red in my life (wardrobe, carpet, curtains, dog collar, spatula, PJs, bed covers, etc). Love red!
ReplyDeletecate you do love red!
Deletehow can you not luff Our Jackie?
ReplyDeleteAdded you to my blog list xxx
FF I luff you! Thanks for adding me to your blog list!
DeleteI like being around red but I don't wear it much (I dress more like a bruise -- lots of blue and black and grey and brown). One of the big oil paintings in our house is primarily red and after we bought it we started buying red furniture. It cheers me up on dreary days, particularly our red velvet couch. I particularly like red cocktails with cherry brandy in December :)
ReplyDeleteLTee, we have a large painting, very modern, in our living room that is very red, it is the focal point of the room!
DeleteCherry brandy that sounds good.
The pincushion and the gloves made me cheerful just in time.
ReplyDeleteLPC that pincushion always makes me happy.
DeleteI used to wear Paloma Picasso's Mon Rouge red lipstick all the time until, sadly, it was discontinued. I heard she stockpiled a lifetime's supply of tubes in her fridge - wish I had thought to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI've never been able to find a shade I liked quite as much, but MAC's Ruby Woo comes close.
Merry Wife, I guess lipstick stays fresh in the fridge! well she had inside information that it would be discontinued, if only you had known.;) I have yet to find a great red lipstick for my skintone. I usually have to mix them.
DeleteThere's not a lot of red in my life unless you count burgundy. Navy has seen quite a bit of love in recent days. Those gloves look really, really nice.
ReplyDeleteGigi I have to say J Crew does a nice job with the gloves. I have some from Lands End and they are not nearly as nice and cost the same.
DeleteHi Dani - just wanted to say hello, I am in the States for a few days. I love your color collages. Wish I could check in more often, miss your blog entries.
ReplyDeletebest wishes always!
