Simple Coat for a Simple Uniform

Some mornings I feel like throwing on something really plain and tailored.  I always think those wardrobe quiz things which ask a series of questions to "define your style" are practically useless, well either that or I have a split-personality-style.  Most days I like to wear a skirt or dress with tights and heels but then this person emerges who has no time for foolishness and wants a basic no-nonsense outfit.
On those days, and in this weather, I wear my Eileen Fisher riding pants.
I own these pants in both black and brown, and now you are really going to understand how absolutely simple this outfit is: I wear the black pair with a black v neck sweater, and the brown pair with a brown v neck sweater.  My sweater is the Classic Cashmere V Neck Jumper from Brora.

I had an idea that I would find a really tailored coat to top this outfit, something in a dark gray tweed ideally.  It had to have simple lines and be fairly warm, and though my first thought was to save my money for a Brora coat, in the end I ordered one from the J. Crew sale, the Collection Tweed Coat.

It has a cocoon shape and suits the "uniform outfit" of slim pants and v neck jumper.  With the addition of a scarf and my handbag, and either black or brown tall boots from La Canadienne, we're done.

My brown everyday handbag picks up the brown in the houndstooth.
I wore this simple outfit twice this week, one day the brown and the next day the black.  It's nice not to be so fussy sometimes.

It's Friday and I hope you're doing something fun,
xoxDani

  1. 1-2-3 DONE Uniform perfection. Glad you found something so simple and ideal Dani. And I always smile at you in pants. Coat sleeves don't look too cropped either. Happy weekend to you and yours.

    1. GF they are not very cropped at all, I like the sleeve length, I just pull my sweater down to cover my wrist which I like the look of. I can also wear this coat over THE Chanel jacket with the fur trim, the fur then has some freedom around the wrist and above the collar. There is a blue in the coat that matches the jacket perfectly.
You know I have a tortured relationship with pants but these EF pants are magical!

    2. Knowing you wear 'em and having her ponte pencil, agreed.
NEED: Magic solution to my tortured relationship with dresses ;-)

  2. That is a beautiful look, if I like something I usually wear it a few days in a row just to make life easier.

  3. Perfect Dani - and I wear a "uniform" everyday, and sometimes the same thing several days in a row - shocking I know. Do change my undies. Love the coat.

  4. I love clothes that dispense with all the "what to wear" drama. This looks very smart, but cosy and comfortable. If I don't have to wear a suit, I head straight to my other uniform of jeans, boots and jacket.

  5. Well I love this Dani - I went through my closet again this morning, looking for things to wear. It was either too tight or too uncomfortable (read: itchy) or too work-related. I am living in my cynthia steffe and paige premium jodphurs - more comfortable then even minis or capris, though I think I will actually order EF brown jodphur. GF and I are doing a thing this month - no net outlay on clothes. Lucky for me, a got a call from a place where i consigned some clothes, so I think I will have a enough to make it a net zero! I am definitely looking for a uniform and I think yours is chic and simple and I am absolutely stealing it!

As an aside, I am wearing my Brora cardi this morning with just a sleeveless silk blouse. It is definitely MUCH warmer than my JC cardis and no itch factor. It is awesome!

    1. Oh and PS - which shoes are you wearing with your uniform in the house? Just curious!

  6. I'm all about the "uniform" especially on cold, busy days. You look chic and classic because you have put together some perfect pieces. Isn't it nice to get on with your day knowing your put together for anything.

  7. Simple yet classic Dani!
I used to wear more of a uniform when my children were in school and I was super busy volunteering, car pooling and keeping the home fires burning. Things are a bit more relaxed and laid back now that we are empty nesters. Yet a uniform could reappear especially if it looked like this one!

  8. I love this look Dani - it's so classic, and very easy to replicate at any price point.
    Have a great weekend!

  9. Oh the beauty of a formula and of limits. I love this post, Dani.

  10. Your uniform sounds perfect. Sometimes what may not seem 'blog worthy' or does not photograph well (like solid dark colors) looks beautiful and chic irl. I love simple outfits that are also comfortable, nothing beats that.

  11. Absolutely lovely, Dani! I was very tempted by this same coat when it got marked down with the extra % off, but decided to pass since I had already opted for a Lady Day to use as my winter coat. If I lived somewhere colder then I probably would have tried this one too though, as it really is lovely. Enjoy...the coat is beautiful on you! :)

  12. I love a uniform. For years my work uniform has been a silk top or blouse, pencil skirt and pumps. I can put together endless variations of this outfit and add things like scarves and jewelry to make them interesting. Lately I've been drawn to a dress and pumps. Easy, comfortable and professional. I don't live where I need to add a coat but if I did I would definitely gravitate toward the cocoon shape. I am picturing your outfit Dani and I think you must look very put together and chic!

  13. My EF pants and viscose jersey long sleeved EF tee is my uniform. I wish I had the whole thing in brown (for that I have a pair or Worthny.com brown knits pants and light weight turtleneck). I find that my changing jewelry, scarves, coats, cardigan sweaters, etc--I have a number of looks. I've been trying to really and substantially simplify my wardrobe for several years now--and I think I am finally getting somewhere. The difficulty I have is a spring/summer uniform.

  14. How many typos can I have on one post (above). Sorry everyone. I am going to vow to proof read!

  15. Hi Dani-So happy you are reaching uniform nirvana-very simple and so elegant, and I will say it again, I just love your bag. This combo definitely reminds me of some of the outfits that Audrey, Sophia and Grace would wear when they traveled. You are such a glamourpuss!

  16. Everything about this is perfect and I feel this is what you been looking for . Simple outfits in classic styles. Love the tweed and I bet you reach for this when walking downtown. You look fabulous darling.

  17. Timeless. I am pleased for you that it has been warm enough to venture out in a wool coat.

  18. I love the simplicity. My winter uniform tends to be a merino turtleneck and cords with oxfords and a tweed blazer. Channeling a professor somewhere. Just add pipe.

  19. Completely classic and chic Dani. Love that you've found this easy uniform. I have some Eileen Fisher items that I just love, and yours sound wonderful. The coat is wonderful!

  20. Perfect. I rely on black and brown too, for a uniform. And often, if I'm REALLY daring, I wear them together. I think your coat makes you elegant without effort.

  21. The coat is the perfect addition to your very chic, understated "uniform". Love it with the LV bag and your scarf. The coat is the nicest J Crew coat this season. I don't know how I missed it. I received the Brora Scottish tweed coat this week and absolutely love it. I really appreciated your suggestions and Marsha's help with with the size and color. She was spot on. I indulged in the winter clearance sale and got the Liberty circle skirt that matches the lining of the coat. It has a nice movement and is super comfortable. I wanted to get the matching tweed skirt that you suggested, but beautiful as it is, the length is too short for me. Thrilled with my purchases from Brora.

    1. AmW! I am thrilled for you! Those are great pieces, I know you'll get so much wear out of them and you'll be so happy and comfortable every time you put them on.

  22. Hi Dani, when I saw this coat on the J. Crew website, I immediately thought of you! So glad that you got it. It looks so elegant with your LV bag. I love your idea for a uniform. My everyday outfit these days, is a gingham shirt, dark denim skinny jeans, La Canadienne riding boots, and my new Canada Goose parka - functional, simple and no fuss. On your past recommendation, I have been looking at the Eileen Fisher riding pants but have no idea about the sizing since the Bay does not carry that item and I would have to order online - how would you say the sizing is compared to J. Crew?
