Mop Philosophy Monday

We had a house full of our Rascals this weekend and it was the best.  I like to place some flowers in the Rascal bedrooms when they travel home from Toronto, I picked these ones up at the grocery store.
I added a little bowl of green apples too... always trying to get fruit and veg into those kids, it doesn't matter how old they get.

We went for a hike on Saturday and the weather was fine, cold and clear.
We've been hiking this area with the Rascals since they were really small and it brings back lots of memories.
Now that they both live in a concrete jungle they really appreciate visiting the woods when they're home.

On the trail
The trails were so muddy that Scout had a perfect coat of mud covering her underside by the time we left for home:
You can bet there was a bath in Scout's future!

Did you cook any Easter meals?  Our plans completely changed this weekend after Poppa suffered a fall on Friday.  We didn't want him making the journey by car to our house for the Easter lunch so we made reservations at an Italian restaurant instead.
(Don't worry, he's fine.  He needed a few stitches but otherwise it wasn't serious: thank goodness.)

There's something to be said for going out on a holiday: no dishes!

I have a day of admin and cleaning.  Somehow the mud from the hike made its way into various corners of our house so a floor scrubbing is in order, as well as the usual Monday Reorganizing.
Hope your day gets off to a productive and cheery start.

Swedish Death Cleaning Magic

I used the principles behind the Swedish Death Cleaning method to attack my armoire of dishes over this last week.
One of the ideas is to get at these projects slowly and to give oneself a week per room, or in this case, per armoire. I'm normally rushing around and generally exhausting myself when I tackle a de-cluttering project so this attitude made a big difference.

The armoire is in the dining room and held every sort of dish set we own that is not in regular use.  I would occasionally open it to pick out something to use for a dinner party, but I avoided doing that for the most part.   It made me pretty upset to see how crowded and disorganized it looked.

Here is the before picture, it looks like something from a scary tv show called Hoarders: Tipping Dishes Edition.
A scary mess.
The armoire itself is quite pretty and fits perfectly into the corner of the dining room.  It travelled from Austria with my father-in-law (Poppa) and his family in 1938.  I don't know how old it is, but my guess is that it's at least 200 years old.
The only change I made to the armoire itself when Poppa gave it to us was to add a tassel to the key. I really love the way the turquoise looks against the wood.
The original gold silk curtain is still in place behind the glass front, and though it is showing some age with fray and the occasional threadbare hole I won't replace it, I find it so charming.

Here is the armoire after the Death Cleaning Magic:
Ta Da
I took out rather a lot of dishes and all of the linen.  The linen should be stored in my armoire for fabrics and linens in my laundry room.  "Give everything a place" being another principle of Swedish Death Cleaning.
I have a set of white dishes that I occasionally use for dinner parties when I want a really clean palette.  You can see the bowls and plates to the set above.
I tried to organize each shelf by colour so that it makes some sense to look at everything, and to find something.
We have quite a bit of brass and I don't use it very often, but for the most part it was passed down to us by Poppa so it is quite special.  I occasionally do a mantel arrangement with those brass kettles, and I use the brass candlesticks in the fall and at Thanksgiving.
The red glassware was a souvenir from our trip to Prague in 2008.  It looks lovely at Christmas and in the past I've filled it with port for dinner parties.
This really sweet set of blue and white was a gift from my friend Laura, she gave it to me after her Aunt Emma died.  I guess it really was a result of a Death Cleaning!  Laura's Aunt Emma had loads of dishes and things and it was up to Laura to sort through everything and find homes for it.  It took her ages.
This very delicate set of white dishes with the violet raised pattern was also a gift from Poppa.  It came to Poppa and my mother-in-law from their neighbour Ruth.  Ruth was an elderly lady who my mother-in-law was friends with for years, she really looked after her.  I only met her once, and it was about twenty years ago, shortly before she died.  Ruth spent Christmas with us that year, she really adored my mother-in-law and she left her these dishes in her will.
I like to mix them with blue and white, to me they are very spring-like and look stunning with purple tulips and grape hyacinth for a dinner party.
This asparagus set is from France, something I bought on impulse one day while shopping in Elora.  I couldn't resist them!  The large platter holds loads of steamed asparagus and the individual plates are meant for the melted butter and aioli served with the asparagus, for dipping.
Here is a case of not even knowing what I owned because the armoire was such a cluttered mess.  I completely forgot about these mismatched antique teacups!  This is bad because my Aunt Deb asked me a couple of months ago if I had any I could lend her for my cousin's bridal shower this May.  I said I didn't own any!  I'll have to phone her today to see if she still needs some.
The teacups I totally forgot about.

These interesting pieces were more gifts from Poppa, that soup tureen with the wee flowers is so pretty on the table at Easter, I love it.  We have a few gold-tipped dishes, a set that I split with my sister-in-law.  I use it in addition to my white dishes to fancy them up.

This little Rosenthal dish was a recent gift from Poppa.  Sometimes I bring him food in little stoneware containers that are perfect for transporting dinners.  He likes the containers for his leftovers and asked if he could keep them, but only if we made a trade!

The trade.
I removed a giant set of Lenox toile print dishes from the armoire.  They took up loads of space and I never use them.  They are boxed up in a wooden crate for my Ole Rascal son, I think he'll like the colours.
Waiting for Ole Rascal to take them.
Now that I'm finished the armoire/dining room project I'm on to the basement storage room, aka the dumping ground of the house.  I've already started the process and I'll continue to work on it for the next week or so, bring out the paper shredder!
If you missed my original post on Swedish Death Cleaning you can find it here.

Have a lovely day today, I hope it's clutter-free.

Sofie

We went to visit Poppa and his new puppy yesterday and I managed to capture some pictures of the whirling little ball of energy and fur.
My father-in-law has been thinking of getting another puppy for over a year, and he went about it very methodically.  Sofie is an Australian Labradoodle, a Labrador retriever crossed with a miniature poodle, a cross-breed which originated in Australia (hence the name).
She wanted the contents of this shopping bag!
We were there for two hours and she ran around the whole time, I think she has "Fear Of Missing Out" because she was clearly very tired too, I kept waiting for her to pass out with exhaustion.
 Isn't she a doll!
As if our day wasn't cute enough already we received a package from the North Pole, oh I mean from Fort Simpson, where my brother lives with his family.
The package contained gingerbread cookies baked (with help I'm sure) and decorated by my three year old nephew.  And some pictures of our cute fella just to pull the heart strings a little tighter!
They've had a lovely Christmas up in their northern home.  I'm grateful for frequent texting updates from my far-flung family, we miss them.
This Christmas week is just flying by... today I have to tackle some housework and the business month-end, there's no way around it.  Then it's off to see our friends later this afternoon for you know what... Miller Time!
Have a really good day with cute things in it,

Paris Can Wait

The Rascals and MrBP cleared out of here at about 7am yesterday, leaving behind the quietest house imaginable in comparison!
It was an absolutely freezing day too, so good on them to get out and ski in it.
I had a day to putter around and sort things in the house.  I took a day that felt like the luxury of Christmas week to a tee, putting away Christmas presents and sorting out my beauty supplies for the new year.
MrBP gifted me a new scarf for Christmas, the "Fleur de Giverny", and he even themed the gift with a book about Claude Monet's garden at Giverny.
Have you ever been to see Monet's Water Lilies at Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris?  We've been a couple of times, it will definitely change the way you think about the paintings.  I can't wait to get into the book!
Organized my nail polish.
Looks like it will be a pastel-ish year.
After getting my kitchen organized and running to the market for a few things for dinner I decided to tuck into the family room with a fire on and watch a movie (perhaps a fluffy one).  I'd noticed Paris Can Wait on Netflix and it looked like the sort of movie no one else in the family would ever agree to watch with me, and it takes place in France, what could be better?
It was quite an engaging movie and it surprised me a bit, I have to say.  I really liked it.  Interesting too, it was written and directed by Eleanor Coppola, and here's a little interview with her in Vogue about the movie if you're interested.
I cooked up a huge dinner for the skiers including a little apres ski snack with some good red wine for their arrival home.  Those Rascals were all hungry and I managed to sneak so many vegetables into them!
After dinner we watched what will probably be the end of the Christmas movies for this year: the movie Love Actually.  I have to say there were many droopy eyelids after being out in that cold air all day.
Today we'll be going to visit Poppa to bring him some supplies and to meet the newest member of the clan, his puppy Sophie!  She came home with him on Boxing Day and we've all been so excited about her.  Hopefully I'll get some good pictures.
Have a wonderful day,

Boxing Day

I always think of Boxing Day as the day to begin putting away the Christmas things, even though that is not the original meaning of the day.

In Canada the idea of the Christmas Box given to servants or employees was never a practice as it historically was in Britain, but the after-Christmas sales have always been a popular concept!

I guess I'll stick to my own personal meaning, as much as I love Christmas I try to box away the majority of the decorations before the New Year.

Yesterday we woke up to a big fresh snowfall, it was a classic Christmas morning:

We opened the presents, which is always hilarious:
Ole Rascal
Every Christmas I buy a panettone, an Italian Christmas cake, for The Rascals.  It's a treat for them and a childhood tradition but it's also really easy for me.  I only have to dust it with the icing sugar packet it comes with and put it on the table.  I put together a cherry compote this year too, topped with toasted sliced almonds:
Breakfast treats.
That's my little Christmas cake on the right.
We went for a big morning walk to the park so we could enjoy the fresh snow.  It was such a lovely morning.  Our big meal was mid-day, after which Poppa had to head home.
Middle Rascal in the park.
Then it was time to watch Home Alone, have lots of snacks, and we ended the day playing the board game Ole Rascal bought the family: another tradition we have.

I hope your day was a good one too.
What do you get up to on Boxing Day?

Merry Christmas

Wishing you a very merry and cheery Christmas!

Our dinner last evening kept us around the table until nearly 9pm, but with the Rascals on clean-up we soon had the house sorted so we could clear away for Santa's (possible) arrival.
Today it is just our family with our extra-special family member present, Poppa.  It will be a midday meal, after a Christmas cake breakfast and the opening of presents.

Christmas movie tally?  We've watched Elf, A Christmas Story and today that leaves us Home Alone.

Wherever you are I hope you have a wonderful day with lots of laughs.

Mop Philosophy Monday

Just when you think you're ready for Christmas, you wake up and there's only a week to go and still a long list swirling around your head.
First step is to write down the list, I should have done this at 3am but instead I was awake thinking about it for a couple of hours.  Which is probably just as well because I think I have my menus sorted now for next weekend.
We'll be doing a dinner on Christmas Eve and a big midday meal on Christmas Day (this will allow Poppa to head back home on Christmas Day before it gets dark).
My Rascals will all be home too (!) so the key is not just to plan the big meals but to have lots and lots of provisions on hand for breakfast, lunches, snacks and regular dinners.
I definitely need to go to the Happy Store (liquor store) today.  Lots of wine is needed as well as some more Cassis, which is a very delicious and easy dessert poured over vanilla ice cream.  (Incidentally, I've found a non-dairy ice cream called Coconut Bliss that is divine, I'll try to find some today so I can show you the label.)
It's a good time of year for Hot Toddies too, does anyone have a favourite recipe?  They seem to be made with either bourbon, rum or whiskey, (added to a honey and lemon base) but which is the best?
For dinners we're definitely going to have some more roasted sweet potatoes.
I've been craving them since I made them for our dinner on Friday, and so many vitamins to sneak into The Rascals!
So easy too.
How's your Monday shaping up?  Still have a long list to tick off before Christmas?  Do you have your menus sorted?
Have a really good one and enjoy the process,
