Denim and Delft

I just had to add a couple of things from Brora to my summer wardrobe.  It started with my frying neck.  Do you experience this phenomena?  It doesn't seem to matter how much sunscreen I slather all over my neck and upper chest, the sun still burns my skin.  I don't know how that happens but I have the answer to The Neck Fry: a linen scarf from Brora.
Linen Stripe Scarf in Delft Blue
The scarf is a beautiful loose linen weave in the most tremendous shade of delft blue with a slight gray stripe running through it.  It looks great with white, with navy, black and denim.
Speaking of denim I ordered this Cotton Textured Cardigan from Brora as well, in the colour Denim.
It has five stars in the ratings because it is indeed a five star sweater.  I'm wearing mine over a plain navy tee shirt, Goldsign jeans and the delft blue linen scarf.  The cardigan has a chunky knit yet it is light and fresh on the body, it blocks the sun (and I love the long sleeves) but it doesn't overheat.

Happy Day, Dollfaces!

  1. These are my colors and I should place an order, too. I would like to knit a sweater like this-- we need KnitYarns to come up with a pattern and yarn suggestions. You will wear these all summer with pleasure.

  2. Hi Dani, these are beautiful items and you are sure to get tons of use out of them. Funny you should mention the neck fry, I have been thinking about the same problem and I was eyeing the Lemlem scarves at J. Crew. I'm off to check out the linen scarves at Brora - thanks for the tip!

    1. Louise, if you like the Lemlem ones, I'd also highly recommend the linen/ silk/ wool ones from Everlane. Mine just arrived and it is very soft, lightweight and not itchy. Haven't checked exact fabric percentages, but can >

  3. That cardigan is such a beauty, it really looks so expensive, wonderful cabling detail and cotton knitwear is my favourite, I prefer it to cashmere.

  4. I love this scarf and sweater. I have one really lovely linen scarf from lacoste, but could always use more! I will have to go take a gander!

  5. The cardigan has a handmade look to it...very nice.
I love linen and your new scarf looks like a soft whisp of fabric.
I hope your neck does not end up peeling...the skin on our necks is so very thin and seems to be very vulnerable.
    Take care Dani

    1. I agree with you hostess. My neck is so delicate and fair. I have not been able to protect it adequately with sunscreen and I even wore sun protective shirts with high collars. Years of daily walks on the sunny beach has taken a toll on my neck above all else. Your beautiful linen scarf is an elegant solution to protect it.

    2. Hostess and AMW, it's weird that sunscreen doesn't work very well on the delicate neck area, I'm really careful and I've never burned too badly but from now on I'm going with scarf + sunscreen.

  6. Dani, I have a question. I'm eyeing the cotton cardigan as it is so beautiful in your photo. My question is sizing. I took a loot at the sizing chart on Brora. I wear a US 12, but my chest size is not as large as they show for this size (16) in their chart. Did you size down a size for your purchase--or did you go by their chart?

    1. Susan I am a US size 4 and I take an 8 Brora, the size charts are very good, they have been accurate in my experience. If you are not the measure they are quoting for size 16 I would size down, another option is to call their customer service which is terrific, they can go through the measurements with you as well.
This sweater is a relaxed fit, many of their cardigans fit quite close to the body but this one is very casual and loose.
It is a beautiful sweater, I've been wearing it all day, it's so comfortable and the colour is perfect.

  7. Dani,
Love the shade of blue. This will be wonderful through the fall. I have noticed from your comments that you seem to be wearing jeans more frequently. Why the change? And I don't mean this in a bad way. I am sure you look great in anything you wear, just curious.

    1. Anon well I found Goldsign jeans last year which actually fit me, but I have been wearing more casual clothes, it's easier when I have to go to a pilates class during the week, I don't really want to change out of skirts and dresses, jeans and a sweater are easier to roll up and throw in my bag while I do my class.

  8. Love both of those! I could use a blue sweater like that, I will have to take a look. I am having arguments with most of my sweaters these days and I think some are on their way out. The color of the scarf looks so different in the stock photo compared with your scarf. I like both colors, but was surprised that yours was the delft blue.

    1. cate it was also a dark day when I took the photo of my scarf, though mine is not as bright blue as depicted int he site photo.
Arguments with your sweaters... I argue with my clothes too!

  9. Also, have you girls in the U.S. seen this? http://www.brorausa.com The prices seem to be in U.S. dollars. I've never tried ordering, but it looks like it could be easier than ordering from the UK site.

    1. Hey cate, if you are in the US it makes sense to order from that relatively new site. Sometimes there is a slightly unfavourable variance in the pricing exchange rate to pounds, or the site selection is not 100 percent identical. But Brora pays all the shipping and duty on US orders, via this subsite only. And orders are shipped from a different courier than DHL/ Royal Mail, so they can arrive much faster - 1 vs. 2 weeks. I only know this from a friend, so not sure if your credit card is actually charged in USD or GBP.

    2. Sorry, should have said duty and tax, shipping is a separate thing.

    3. This is truly good news!

    4. Hi Cate,
I compared the prices on both sites when ordering some winter clearance items a few months ago. The U.K site had much better pricing compared to the U.S.A site in this case. Also, if you live in the U.S.A the VAT will be deducted at check out when ordering on the U.K site. Shipping is around $25.00 (depending on the exchange rate) and my packages arrives super quickly within a few days via DHL.

    5. Thanks Awakening, that is interesting. I have never ordered from Brora before or even done a mock check-out. I'm not good with calculating exchange rates, tax etc., and I'm also deterred by the Brora prices, which are more than I normally want to spend. I think... maybe they're not if I order from the UK site. In the end I just never order. I think I would really like their things, though.

    6. cate I don't have experience with the US site, even when I've sent things to my sister in Georgia I order from the UK site. The VAT comes off the prices for us and it is significant, 20% or so.

  10. Love the cable on the sweater and it's a classic. Hope it makes the summer sale. I have a couple of things on my list. Do you know when the sale is? Thanks for the review and it looks great on you.

    1. Marsha, first summer sale is usually mid-July.

    2. Marsha and GF I think the sale last year was a bit early, maybe first week of July. Don't worry I'll keep you posted.

  13. Beautiful pieces Dani, and so very classic. My skin is so sensitive to sun, that I wear 70 and still burn, especially my neck/chest. I do love the idea of the linen wrap/scarf to deter that! My issue is that I'm always hot! The light linen weave should work though. Those Everlane scarves are lovely as well!
