Linen and Gold

JCrew Goldwyn Dress 2009

I found a dress on ebay last month that I thought I'd share with you: the JCrew Goldwyn dress.
It is constructed of a natural linen with gold silk trim, I think it's so summery.
It has pockets.
You can see Gigi in this dress right here.  I think she looks amazing in it.
The dress has this beautiful criss-cross back.  Look at the soft cotton lining.

The skirt of the lining has a petticoat ruffle, such a pretty touch.  The inside hem is lined with a wide gold bias tape.  JCrew at one time excelled at these little dressmaker details.
I like the dress with my silver Chie Mihara sandals.  They have a gold buckle which sets off the iridescent sheen of the silver leather.

It's worth it to do a "pre-owned JCrew" search of ebay once in a while, these little treasures can be found and they are usually quite affordable.
Hope you are well and happy today.

  1. Hi Dani, this dress is gorgeous! What a great find. I am always trawling Ebay for older J. Crew items that I missed out on. The quality of the older pieces is so much better than the current offerings. Thanks for sharing the photos!

    1. Louise those were good times, a well-constructed dress like this will last many years and can be handed down!

  2. Hi Dani - lovely dress! I love gold so much! I don't recall this dress - probably because at the time I knew it would not work on my figure, I guess! I love those finds - I am always trawling for 2007-2009!

    1. Wendy me too and this is a good one. It just feels so good to wear and it's kind of fabulous with the gold against the linen.

    1. Fred me too. I look at new dresses and I think oh I wonder how much poly is in that. It's so un-thrilling!

  5. The special details make all the difference don't they? It looks lovely, very DaniBP. I can see you wearing this again and again over the years, or maybe your daughter eventually borrowing it and making it her own.

    1. xoxo my older daughter with her blonde hair will be stunning in this dress, it may move into her closet sooner rather than later!
Looking at a dress like this really illustrates those great little things that made ordering a new outfit from JCrew so exciting, I hope they get back to those details in their future collections.

  6. Beautiful dress, Dani!
I'm a late starter to J Crew.... blame it on living on the other side of the world.
It does seem that I missed their best era. I love the cotton lining and ruffle.
I think I'll start stalking ebay for old Crew. I wonder what my size would be in old, pre-vanity sizing? I'm thinking a 2 or 4.

  7. Oh I love the dress - so lovely, a beautiful combination of colours. I think my disappointment with J Crew has come from the recent batches of clothing... I first bought it 14 years ago, and the quality was fantastic, more recent purchases are in holes after only a season.
I love all the little dressmaker details as you call them - the pockets, bra strap keepers, grosgrain binding on hems.... thoughtful detail that always make me love something more.

  8. This dress is really lovely. Do you have any tips for those shopping preowned J Crew on Ebay? And yes, the dressmaker details are beautiful. What a great buy you made. I would love to see a photo of you in this dress--hair and all.

  9. Dani, you look amazing in the dress too! I also have the same dress, can you imagine if we all met for tea wearing it (just a laugh)? The dress is lovely, I forgot all the nice details but I do remember being pleasantly surprised when I received it.

  10. The dress looks wonderful and veryuch your style. I am afraid they will never get back to those finishing details, too bad really because this was where the little secret was about JCrew. Now they are just another mall store :(

  11. This is stunning! I especially love the lighting of these details- the soft glint of the gold, the texture of the linen...
I am rather new to JC, so it's sad to see how much the quality has diminished...

  12. I think I read that some retailers had consultants tell them what to stop "adding"-- the little foulard bits, anything but dull polyester linings etc. Some did not notice; others read Dani! Someone really thought about this dress--just lovely.
