Uniform Lately

As is so often the case the clothes I had planned to wear this summer are not the clothes that I am actually wearing.  I am trying to ask myself in the wardrobe planning stages "what are you actually going to wear?" but then unforeseen circumstances pop up and my plans go awry.
The linen schoolboy jacket from JCrew for example.  I had one in white at the beginning of the season (purchased last summer) and I did wear it a couple of times this year, until I noticed that it was starting to look like I had rolled around on a great dirty barn floor covered in newspapers.  Which I have not been up to.
So I bought a barn-floor friendly version instead, this soothing "honey-brown".
I've been wearing it all the time!  This is how: over a navy cotton perfect fit tee shirt, dark navy Goldsign jeans, those Kiki ballet flats and my Tory Burch straw summer bag.  That straw bag is probably the only visually interesting thing in the whole get-up.
I think Lane asked me about a month ago if I was using my straw bag and at that point no, I thought it was too big.  But then I started hauling it around and it is indeed ideal for summer.  It can hold newspapers, magazines, two bottles of wine, a large package of almonds and a bag of chips.  Clearly it is the perfect summer bag.
I had planned to wear my navy linen Chanel skirt with button-front shirts from Kiel James Patrick.  (Remember this post?)  Ha!  What was I thinking?  I love those shirts but wearing one makes me want to chew my arm off!  So I've given them to my daughter who does wear button-front shirts all the time.
Phew.  Instead I'm wearing another perfect fit tee with my skirt, the one above has an elbow-length sleeve which I think of as a tiny bit dressier.
Perfect Fit Long Sleeve Tee
I have about eight of these tee shirts in navy, they are boring and basic but it's exactly what I feel like wearing this summer.  They seem to be back to full price (as does the linen schoolboy jacket, not sure what is up with that) but I bought mine on sale for cheapie, which is all they really deserve.  The hems are already unravelling on mine which I am tolerating as I do like the fit.

Can you see what is missing from this summer wardrobe list?  Yup, cotton frocks.  I'm trying to find a couple (that are not white, I've wrecked two already) that I can wear through the end of August so I've ordered a couple on the sales from Tory Burch and JCrew... stay tuned for those reviews in the next few days.

What's your uniform looking like these days my Tooties?

  1. Barn friendly -I love that and I really like that outfit, navy capris are definitely on my someday list.
I am in my white dress and Brora cardigan all the time, both so perfect, I take the dress off the minute I'm indoors, so not a mark on it.

  2. Tabs this is key, do not wear your white dress in the kitchen, I've wrecked my whites while cooking. Turmeric does not come out apparently!

  3. Dani, like the look but way to hot here in Boston to wear all those layers. I have been wearing a lot of cotton and jersey skirts with loose tops ,breezy. can't wait for fall weather ,I can't stand this humid weather!

  4. I did wear a white dress yesterday; it is block printed with blue designs and is from J McLaughlin. I wore it with a little navy cardigan and did not get ti dirty! Usually I wear cafe capris in natural or navy with a T ( I have lots of perfect t's and lots of vintage Vnecks and now Everlane) and a linene cardigan or chambray blazer. White jeans and a tunic. Easy and cool.

    1. Lane everyone but me can wear white. I have a friend down the street who wears white jeans, Jack Rogers sandals and tunics and she looks so chic.

  5. Love your outfit with the straw bag!
It is finally summer here(after a cold and rainy may/june) and wear mostly jerseydresses/maxis or shorts to keep cool.
This year i am also wearing my popovers with denim a lot.It just such a relaxt and summery look.

    1. Ina I like the look of those popovers but they cut me off at the thigh and it is not attractive, I'm the wrong height for them or something. They look perfect on you!

  6. Living in Texas (where it is hotter than hell most of the time in the summer) means no sleeves most of the time for me! My uniform this summer consists of a number of sleeveless Eileen Fisher dresses in viscose jersey. I have the oval tank dress in black, navy, and a sort of darker French blue. I wear these dresses with various scarves and necklaces. I also have a few sleeveless EF dresses from last year that are fitted in the bodice, but flare after that. I have one in black and another in gray. In addition, I have a couple of linen shifts in prints. At the farm I am wearing loose linen cropped pants with linen t shirts or cropped cotton pants with t shirts. Comfort is key, but I like to look nice. I don't leave the house not looking my best--makeup, hair, at least simple jewelry.

  7. For cotton frocks that are well-made with lovely classic, simple cuts, I would recommend Ann Mashburn (www.annmashburn.com). In addition to a collection of absolutely wonderful shirts, she makes a variety of dresses and skirts of truly excellent quality.

  8. This summer's been so hot and sticky that I've been living in tanks with shorts (knee-length, out of consideration for My Public) and loose long skirts. There's always a lightweight cotton cardi handy to deal with airconditioning. On cooler days, deep jeans and navy tees.
I'd love a taupe or deep cream linen jacket to throw on over anything, just haven't seen the right one yet. Yours looks perfect!

  9. here is the joy of summer for me - June was cold and rainy and really buggered up my sense of what i would wear. I think I lived in capris and my jeans and of course now it is so hot that I cannot even look up at where my trousers are folded so neatly in the closet! I loved the honey brown linen; it was so lovely and never popped back in my size, though now if it is back to full price it is probably there! I am working on my packing today - very organized this time! Plus, it helps that the weather looks crazy hot for the next 8 days and I don't have to fly!

    1. WMM it will be boiling here but bring a light sweater for the A/C! I think it is back in your size but also full price? I bought mine on sale and with an additional 30% discount, I didn't pay much for it. And now I wear it every day so good CPW. If you wait it will go to sale again...

  10. Hi Dani, your summer uniform is great, but I can't be doing with jeans in this heat! I was not made for heat and humidity - I droop like an old dish rag!

    1. Patricia I know! And I don't wear shorts, tight skirts seem even tighter in hot weather... I really want some full skirted cotton dresses that are barn friendly (not white)!

  11. Barn friendly! Your straw bag and outfit look very spiffy.

My current "uniform" is my walking gear...
black yoga style capris by LuLu Lemon, a white tank top and a Lands End hoodie. If I don't wear this I am not inspired to do my hour walk along the seafront.

The latest frock is an aquatic pattern in cool rayon, a dress handmade in Bali. It's rather fun because it has three layers of flirty ruffles at the bottom of the hem. I recently posted a picture of it on my blog.

How do the Perfect Long-Sleeve V Neck Tees fit? I'm looking at these, but they are online only.

(I think your summer uniform looks great. Those skirts and shoes are really appealing)

  17. Love your uniform! Had to laugh at the "chew your arm off" - so true in the high humidity we have been getting. I have been wearing my khaki utility skirt (J. Crew, a couple years old now), ankle cropped jeans, drapey linen tees and my Emerson Fry dresses.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Louise that skirt sounds nice... are your Emerson Fry dresses cotton? I just cannot wear silk right now, too hot, so wearing my Horses Atelier dress is on hold for now.

      Delete
    2. Hi Dani, I got two dresses from Emerson Fry, the silk/linen bib front tunic dress, and the safari dress which is a heavyweight cotton twill. I am wearing the silk/linen dress quite a bit - the linen front feels very cooling. The safari dress is too heavy right now, I will have to wait until it cools down a bit. The humidity is supposed to be back this upcoming week!

  18. Great uniform Dani, it's subtle and chic. I am a fan of neutrals with a splash of color for added interest. This summer I'm wearing my usual cotton knit dresses most of the time, now that the weather has smartened up. In the country I've been wearing shorts but the mosquitoes love me so I've switched back to pants unless it is hotter than 28C. I don't know what it is about J.Crew perfect shirts but I had to donate all of mine as they kept riding up in the most annoying way. They are not cut for my thick-waisted shape I guess.

    1. xoxo they seem to be the only shirt I CAN wear this summer, though I wish they were sewn together a bit better. Pants are a must around mosquitos, agreed, your uniform sounds perfect, I should look at cotton knit dresses.

  19. Love the outfits and that bag!

I've been wearing, oddly enough, white. I hardly ever wear white. I bought a white linen Boden top in June, which I LOVE, I wore it at the cottage almost every single day - perfect for those humid sunny days but I can still breathe in the top and I like the scoopneck tees from Tall Girl. Been wearing my summer dresses and skirts. I did order a pair of white Boden linen pants but they are so huge on me, they will be sent back. I am on the hunt for a nice white cotton dress now.

    1. LR I love white! I am too clumsy and always into a mess, it's not for me. I've ruined white shirts this summer too, as well as the dresses and the linen jacket. What a menace!

  20. Love your summer bag! You sure are fickle when it comes to your uniform, but then aren't we all? What we think will work and what we actually want to wear in the moment are more often than not entirely different things :D Which is why I always bring several dresses when traveling to a wedding or other such event!

My uniform has been dresses, preferably knit, though a few cotton shirt dresses, as well as the Sanur dresses worn as skirts with a perfect fit tee. Boring, yes, but comfy! Perhaps if I had a cute striped tote like yours I could bump my outfits up a notch. None of my capris fit me so dresses and skirts it is. It's ok, they are more comfortable and breezy anyway!

    1. Oh, and I also have to add that wearing button downs such as the ones in your post also makes me want to chew my arm off. I completely know what you mean!!! Uncomfortable and stiff and all around awful... even though they look very nice.

    2. JCrewJD, fickle is my middle name! Ah the buttonfront, they look darling but make me crazy!

  21. I find what I think I'll wear sometimes isn't what I'll actually end up wearing the most too. We're in Winter here, so I'm not sure you want to hear about my layers of dark wool, but during our long and hot and never ending Summer (the Southern Hemisphere equivalent of your never ending Winter) I wore sleeveless dresses, my favourite in Navy or white, and flat sandals. The ones that were worn the most had an A-line or empire line, rather than being completely fitted so were easy to wear and cool. For in between weather, I like JBrand gigi crops in white with an oversized tunic top from Tory Burch (a few seasons ago in chambray). I've tried other colours of gigi's, but I always go back to the white, the fabric is nicer (why do they have to change around fabrics on the same style?? It makes buying on the internet difficult!) xx

  22. BUTTONING LIP Dani, have I brought you over to the dark, non-frock side? Your summer uniform is exactly mine, except I swap the Goldsigns for minnies, capris most days (jeans and offices no go, plus I am prone to baby-like heat rash.)
Glad DS benefitted from KJP. Wishing you good fortune with this round of TB. And I have to have a bag that carries it all. No more separate handbag and stuff tote for me, unless groceries or happy store.

  23. Hi Dani- Your outfits are all fabulous! I love your style! Where did you get those jeans? Are they Jcrew? If you don't mind sharing sizing info that would be great as well. Thanks! Allie

  24. Dani, I can't get over the fact that you are wearing long sleeves and jackets in the summer. Look great though! I hate to admit but when I am not working I have no motivation to get dressed, I don;t know how you do it. I am mostly in shorts and tees or tanks, yep, that's it. If I go out I swap the shorts for an a-line skirts. No other layers in this heat. I am supposed to start in a new place on the 22nd so I will swap a-line for my pencils that have been gathering dust in my closet. Glad to get a job but will miss wearing shorts all day.

  25. As much as I think I'll wear dresses and skirts in the summertime, I don't so am not looking at them at all. It's skinny jeans and a T or chambry/button front shirt with ballet shoes I seem to live in when I'm not at work.

Love your uniform. I was awfully tempted by the same jacket but had to remind myself the earth colors don't do anything for my coloring.

  26. I really love those jeans on you, Dani.

I layer a lot in the summer time. Even though it may be over 100 degrees outside, the office is sub arctic. I need a jacket or finishing piece in order to maintain body heat! I have been investing in lighter fabrics and elbow length sleeves so the jacket doesn't look out of place for the season. Can't do linen though. The wrinkles just kill me!

  27. Hi Dani, I hope you are having a nice weekend.

My uniform right now is cuffed jeans, flats, and a v neck tee. It has not been very hot, though. When it warms up, I mostly wear dresses. I am looking for a good summer skirt but have come up empty handed so far.

Your barn comment made me smile :)

I have a winter question for you, though! What is the waistband like on the Brora tights? Is it tight?

I tried to post my list of favourite historical homes the other day, but I had a problem posting from my phone. My favs in downtown Toronto are Mackenzie House, Campbell House, and the first post office. A little further away is my all time favourite, Spadina House. Perhaps you and GF and I could go visit one together!
