Mop Philosophy Monday

How do you like the January flowers?  Aren't they like a bright spot of sunshine?
MrBP has his own little bit of brightness a couple of days a week: Scotch whiskey.  I always wished I could drink it but no, I've never pushed past the "it tastes like gasoline" phase.
Keeping a steady eye on your finances?  Me too.  Rather than keep all of those bothersome receipts I am paying for everything on debit and then transcribing the weekly spending by hand into this book, using the wonder that is online banking of course.
Well I had to get Scout in here, how do you like her favourite toy?  It's an elephant, named Mee-mo.
Thinking about your changing attitude towards prints?  Me too.  I seem to be drawn to animal prints, art-deco type designs and Liberty picks from Brora.
Liberty prints from Brora
Speaking of Brora, can we talk about the fabulous winter sale?

I've invested in a couple of the Cashmere Round Neck Jumpers.  I love these, they are such a great basic and I find the round neck more flattering and comfortable than a v-neck.
After editing my closet I found I didn't have many wearable jumpers... I did have a few that were too small and what good were they doing me?
I also found a few of my silk dresses and blouses for spring had grown too short and ill-fitting, goodbye to them as well.  The remedy?  Not complete replacement of 10 things but one thing in each category seems reasonable.
Silk Tie Front Blouse
I am going to give these silk pieces a try... this blouse in a "fresco blue" and the silk smocked dress (which is lined in silk as well).

Silk Smocked Dress
It's so difficult to find a nice silk-lined frock anymore!
How have you been?  Any closet edits or replacements?  Anyone drinking Scotch whiskey?
I hope your Monday goes absolutely as well as it can,
xoxDani

  1. Love your flowers!
Dani, you would be so proud of me! I threw out 3 bags of old clothes this weekend! It was all a but traumatic, but they've gone to the local charity shop so there's no going back!
I won't be replacing any items (I've already done that!), but I am on the lookout for a grey cashmere turtle-neck to replace my ancient Brora one....

  2. Scout is so adorable. This might sound silly, but her face reminds me of the face of an old-fashioned stuffed toy, there's something in there that is something other than cute - a bit regal or perhaps wise.

I love prints. I think it's one thing that I have a good "eye" for. I'm am deeply picky about prints, and always trust my instinct on them - now if only I could channel that into the rest of my wardrobe!

I so admire that you get rid of clothes that no longer fit. I really need to embrace that attitude more.

  4. Oh good for you! I am about to update on how January has gone! I still swear by entering all receipts in budget tracker - let's you slice and dice!

    Love your brora pieces!

  5. Firstly on the previous post - Mr BP is cradling a puppy whilst wearing cashmere, we'd both be in Haz mat boiler suits!
I can't even bear the smell of whisky.
I really do need to let go of my Brora jumpers/cardigans, they are all too small but a small fortune is in that lot, when I get up the nerve you and Get Fresh will get first pick.
Wendy, you're out of luck, too obscene on me means the same on you!

    2. Tabs, hubs is in same camp with you re. whisky (teenage incident.) I have to sequester in my office with my dram of Talisker or bourbon. Brora cashmere from genuine Scottish homestead will feel very swank should you clear out and will keep good urban company with WMM's Pilner shoes.

  6. RDog indulges in a glass (or two) of scotch a few days a week as well. When I was pregnant, I found the smell to be just awful. He had to keep a coaster on the top of his glass to keep the smell from floating over to me and making me sick.

  7. I am done culling my clothes...even my unmentionables. It was really tough getting rid of the socks. Silly I know but still hard. Still scared of prints but have ordered a few sweaters...waiting to see if they pan out. Love the flowers.

  8. The flowers are gorgeous. It is so nice to have them in the house, isn't it?

I'm done my purge and my careful additions have begun. I found an ecru colored shift dress and pencil skirt (knits) that will get lots of wear in my wardrobe. I got the cognac sandals I was after and a beautiful printed blazer in greys/blacks/ivory that is silk with silk lining (I thought of you!) so the only thing left on my wish list is a red bag.

I should look at more prints. Especially tops, since they could help make outfits with my skirts and pants. Your prints are inspirational. Leopard is good on you, Dani.

Scout has such a lovely face. I just want to squeeze her, she's so cute!

  9. Morning Dani, I've never been able to drink Scotch. My husband prefers Canadian rye whiskey and likes to buy a new one every year at Christmas. Your flowers are very lovely, so cheerful. I agree with Abby, Scout looks like a venerable Steiff - I think it might be because her coat is still short and wavy, still quite controlled. You know, I really don't think anyone would mind if you added a photo of her to every post!

  10. Hi Dani, funni that you would talk about prints today. I was at Tory Burch last Friday and they "hats" print shirtdress made me think of you (BTW it is long, I was looking at the white one but can't pull it off I think).
I found out I am attracted to all the prints that remind me of South European tiles. I got the linen tee in the Madera print (see pic on my Insta).
Scout is gorgeous and the kids must be in heaven. My daughter still wants a cat and my husband told her she can have one when she is 11 (I think he hopes that's far in time enough for her changing her mind about cats!)

    1. Ema I think your husband will find out that kids have long memories for pet promises! A cat is very manageable though, she would love it. I saw that hats print but I just don't get it, to me it had the look of donuts or something?
I'm having fun following you on Instagram, love your posts!

  11. I'm afraid my wardrobe is on standby and not getting much attention. I love the blue blouse you are going to try. but I don't wear many blouses because of the gap factor around the buttons. If they buttons don't gap, the blouse is likely too large every where else! And, a V neck sweater is more flattering on me than a round (crew) neck.

I am not a Scotch drinker either. My husband likes Kentucky Bourbon and I don't drink that either, but can be persuaded if it is used in a milk punch!

Love the bright flowers. The girls got me two African Violets that I'm trying not to kill.
As for the strong stuff--I'm never sure what kind of spirits they are but I'll have a few sips. It is definitely an acquired taste!
You do so well with prints! I didn't have any previous to my gingham collection and liberty print size florals. I find anything else really overwhelms me.

Your Scout is a charmer, he looks soft and cuddly. Would love to give him a big hug!
While you wear patterns well they are not my favourites but I do have a couple of dresses that are patterned and get compliments on them so I may dabble in something new for Spring...the fashion mags are showing oodles of them right now.

    1. Anon, I have the Brora Fresco vine print blouse in an 8. It was a bit long on me, but I am only 5'2" and it was a simple hem. The style is a bit loose and blousy. But the neckline is very pretty, not too low and the fabric is nice. I did acquire the fresco cami to wear under (my office freezes), but that's not essential. The one thing I would point out is that the 3/4 sleeve bands are quite snug on the forearms. But if you wanted a looser/ push up arm, any tailor could solve simply with fine elastic or a button and loop closure.

It is a lovely mid-blue and looks great with navy suiting, jeans, or under a V-neck as well.

  17. BLOOMING GORGEOUS Dani, I eyed that dress, but the waist made me nervous, think at your height would fall better. You will like the blouse, promise. I am still holding out for the cropped cable cardi in platinum and some new tights. But the exchange and my budget do not agree yet.

Have you tried mint.com or quicken? I know it might be nervy to have financial info "in the cloud" but I find all the comparison pie graphs one can pull with an electronic product very useful. My colour-coded self I guess. Plus it is so easy to import/ export all transactions, budget for the un-monthly spends.

    1. Hi GF, I have done mint and I don't like it one bit. Different methods I guess, my financial advisor was here today and we were talking about just this very thing... whatever works and connects is the method one should use... I like to write it down and make notes and then I can proceed, I can see where I am overspending and I can see what is working.
I am worried the dress won't work, smocking across the waist, not sure, but I had to try it. Brora is great for returns and a light package not too costly, I know PTTO but okay once in a while?

  18. Love Single Malts. I have quite manly tastes in the drinks cabinet.

I love the flowers, Dani! Do you have a specific place you keep your monthly present, or do you move them about? Our cats always drink from the vases, and have rid me of three Waterfords in the past year, so I'm loathe to put flowers out at all any more and miss them greatly.

I love judicious use of prints, tempering them with solids. A bit like switching out cushion covers through the seasons to perk up our neutral furniture.

  20. Hi Dani,
I can't stand the smell of scotch and agree with you about the taste. Scout is too cute. Hope she'll be a regular in your posts. I just received my sale order with the 10% off from Brora today. I bought the floral and Leopard print stole and lace trim round neck both in steel as well as the silk Kimono Blouse which was on super sale. As always I'm happy with the purchase and quality. I thought that steel was a grey color but it is a actually a muted navy blue. I'll look forward to seeing how you style your new purchases.

I really did like that colour "steel". Brora does colour so well, and their collections merge with each other even a few years on, that's their idea and it works.

  23. You're so organised Dani! I am anxiously awaiting my first Brora purchases.I'll review them on the blog when they arrive (which will be a quick try on as it's again 40C plus today! We have the direct opposite weather to you it seems). I bought a long line loose grey sweater that will look good with skinny jeans, and that classic navy cardigan I already mentioned. Plus a few men's socks for my Dad to put aside for his birthday. They should handle the beating they'll get with him (Dad has no concept of how much things cost etc, which is a good and bad thing - these'll get worn while gardening, working on a car engine, and also out to dinners etc!)
