Wearing Linen

I love linen for summer but not the fancy sort.  Forget about trying to wear linen suits or trousers, you'll end up a rumpled mess.  I like linen as a casual focal point, paired with something sharp and worn on the weekends.
I'd wear the Organic Linen Printed Skirt, above, with a simple clean-lined tank top in either white or navy, slim fitted and no-fuss.

I adore the linen shirt, below.  It is the Organic Linen Printed Smock in "sky flower".  I'm crazy for blue and white just now, and this pattern is so pretty and fresh.  I'd wear the smock with a pair of close fitting cropped jeans in any wash, dark or light.  Or with white denim: now you're talking.
More of the sky blue... this Textured Linen Skirt would be so pretty with a simple plain white tee shirt. Add your sneakers and your beach bag.
Sky Blue
Linen and Cotton Textured Jumper

The linen jumper in the same tones is the perfect summer sweater.  Again I'd keep it really simple: white denim jeans or pencil skirt, hair in a pony tail, some espadrille sandals, gin and tonic.

One of the stand-out pieces of Brora's summer collection is this Organic Linen Tunic.  It comes in this stunning Matisse cobalt blue but it also comes in white: dreamy.

It's finally warm enough that I can start thinking about wearing linen!  If I was to add anything to my spring and summer closet I'd throw in a couple of these casual linen pieces: really feminine yet so easy to wear.
Are you buying any linen this summer?

  1. I am on the hunt for some linen pieces...
a white shirt that I can use as a jacket over a tank top and a cool dress that is garden party ready.
I would love to see you in your linens.

    1. Hostess I don't have as many as I'd like, if I were shopping I'd buy these Brora pieces!

  2. I love linen! I love those natural fabrics... I will surprise you and say i love linen trousers... I found if you have a good thick linen, they go through the day pretty well. I have on my wish list for the summer two Brora skirts and one is linen, but I don't think it is pure linen... Blue and white is a lovely combination for the summer. Fresh and clean... Here, in Luxembourg, we are still waiting for the warm to come and allow us to wear proper Spring/Summer clothes... Have a lovely weekend Dani.

    1. Steph you know me, I don't get along with trousers very well. Don't you love the new summer range from Brora, the blues are fantastic. I hope you also have a great weekend.

  3. I love linen, casual or suiting. I don't find the wrinkles a problem, especially if the pieces are steamed and never ironed. The tunic is beautiful, such a pretty shade of blue. I would love it as a short dress but the model is a full inch shorter than me and with the side slits and sheerness it would be scandalous. Sure evokes the feel of a beautiful summer day though. Refreshing!

    1. xoxo did you know I bought a steamer and broke it straight away! The tunic would be gorgeous over a bathing suit. Perfect for the cottage, the easiest thing to do there is just wear a bathing suit with a cover up all day long.

  4. Oh too funny - i am wearing linen trousers and they are looking a bit rumply....will take a picture and post for you! I love all your picks and have been eying them all - they are so lovely!!! I think linen is just so wonderful for summer and I am okay about the wrinkling anyway, so no issues there!!!

    1. WMM I just can't wear trousers period. I don't like wearing linen suiting if the environment isn't casual, then I feel self-conscious about the wrinkles.

  5. I have a wrinkle phobia so no linen trousers for me. I have linen tees though and love them. So nice in the summer heat and because they are a knit, they don't look rumpled. My navy linen tee from F21 is entering its third summer.

I love the blue tunic, Dani. It would coordinate with many things in your closet.

    1. DF we have the same phobia. I know the tunic is perfect isn't it!

    2. DF so glad to read not the only rumple-phobic. I wish I could love linen clothes, but it is strictly tea towels for me. Now, if I could I would snatch up the whole Emma Bridgewater line of those.

  6. I already bought 2 JC linen tees (midnight floral and peony) and also have a couple of older Madewell ones. Love them!

    1. I am returning my linen tee. I've worn it 4 times - love it, except for the small hole already in the front. So disappointed.

    2. Rose those tees are so pretty. Julie will you ask for another one or a refund? Those JC tees can be so delicate, it's crazy.

  7. Hi Dani, I don't mind wrinkled linen - I have some drawstring pants, a skirt and a couple of jackets, mostly natural colour, plus a white shirt. I love the blue Brora pieces though.

    Have a great weekend!

  8. I just bought a fresh white linen blouse this week. When its really hot, it's the most comfortable fabric for me. Rumpled goes with the territory, but being me, I iron it after washing anyway !
I would love to find a nice solid white linen skirt that isn't totally transparent.

    1. Hi AWSL, you'll want a linen skirt lined in cotton, Brora does that but I'm not sure they have a white one on offer this year. Fresh white linen is so classic.

  9. I love linen-especially so and rumpled casual pieces. I have a favorite Tory Burch linen dress that is bling-y but casual enough because of the linen fabric. I ordered the collection linen blazer from J Crew during the promo-it is due to arrive on Monday, so we'll see how it goes. No linen trousers or dress pants though...just too creased and very unflattering.

    1. Julie I can't wait to hear your review of the linen blazer, I'm not sure I know the one you mean, I'll go take a look.

  10. You know how much I love my linen! Dying for that pretty blue skirt you highlighted. My summer wardrobe is filled with linen, and I agree, it's just so pretty paired with something clean and chic, which can of course be a simple white tee. I unearthed a pair of ancient khaki linen pants from the depths of my bins and am thrilled. They are from probably 20 years ago I'd say, and have stood the test of time. (Though it was fun to see what vanity sizing has done -- they were an 8 and fit like today's 4.) I love the whites and blues, very pretty. It looks like I'm sticking to a palette of white, natural, and navy for the summer, with pops of green, pink and peach.

    1. shopwithM, vanity sizing cracks me up. Your colour story for summer sounds so pretty, very much your style.

  11. I love that shade of blue-- just lovely. I wear linen a lot and like hostess would love to find a nice dress. I have navy trousers from last year and a couple of light sweaters I wear a lot. Of course, linen sheets!

  12. SEASIDE STAPLES Dani, out of my usual personal style, but I really like the whole Brora smock top, necklace and shades. Was happy to see the blue-and-white collection at Brora. Sophie Dahl was pretty (and I like her as a personality/ model) but really not my colours or style. Hmmm, linen sheets would be a good addition along with my tea towel thing.

  13. Linen would not get any use in London...but I love the concept. Something so romantic about it but I do love linen sheets but can't bear the wrinkling of them and I hate ironing so it doesn't get a look in...

  14. I only like to wear linen in tees (wrinkle averse, unite!) -- the Madewell linen tees last forever(at least for me) compared with the JCrew ones. Sometimes I, oops, accidentally toss them in the dryer with the rest of the wash. So far they haven't shrunk too small. I used to use linen sheets until they finally wore out - they're perfect comfort when the weather's warm.

  15. Right now, I only have one linen piece--it's a light blue, short sleeved linen top. Yes, it wrinkles, but who cares? It's a carefree summer piece after all.

While we are talking about linen, does anyone else sleep on linen sheets. We've had them for over 10 years now, and we're not going back. They are cool in summer and warm in winter.

    1. Susan that's it, I have to get some!
That's the thing about linen, it has to be casual so the wrinkles don't matter, your light blue top sounds perfect.
Any sources you have for linen sheets, please let me know!

    2. I like the hemp sheets and linen sheets from this canadian company. They last about 8 years before wearing out and they're so comfortable in warm weather. http://rawganique.com/

    3. I get the Eileen Fisher washed linen ones from Garnet Hill; these are much different than the crisper Italian and Belgian ones, quite rumply, but very comfortable.

  16. The colour of the Brora linen tunic is utterly divine!
I rarely wear linen, but have a linen tee and a linen blazer from APC that is a real wardrobe workhorse. In spite of being linen, it rarely creases and has aged well. It's navy, but has faded slightly over the 3 years I've had it, so now has a lovely worn in but still elegant look.

  17. I love linen. I like the exact opposite pieces as you, though - I like linen for structured items. I find it lends them just the right balance of formality and informality for my style.

  18. I go in and out of being in love with linen and on a love fest with it now. We just had a couple days in the 90s F and I wanted to find all my linen shirts to wear. As for linen suits ... there are times when I say I don't care if I look as if I slept in my clothes :) and there are times when I say no more.

All the pretty blues will be beautiful on you.

  19. Dani, Great suggestions. I have to say I am loving linen for T-shirts too. It wears so much better, doesn't pill and just feels great!

I also love your ideas of how to wear all these! Fun.
