The Hedgehog and the Highlander

The top two stand-out ornaments on our tree this year have to be the hedgehog and the Highlander.
I bought the Highlander in Scotland this past October, at the Palace of Holyroodhouse gift shop, or as we always refer to gift shops "la boutique".
That was a particularly good "la boutique".

Elephants are always a theme on our tree, I can appreciate the gold and glitz of this little fellow:
You can't go wrong with the classic red rocking horse in wood.
The Rascals have their stockings laid out, ready for Santa.
I spent yesterday afternoon chopping and stirring nuts and fruit for the Christmas pudding cake.  I had to make some substitutions to keep it plant based (like using flax eggs instead of real eggs, basically it's just ground flax soaked in water until it reaches a strange, egg-like consistency).  I also used Earth Balance plant-based "butter" instead of coconut oil, only because I don't care for the taste of coconut oil.
It smelled wonderful while it was cooking but we'll have to see how it tastes... though if I pour brandy all over it and light it on fire (not part of the recipe by the way) I think it will be a spectacle and any odd texture will be forgiven.

Last evening was an ideal pre-Christmas time at home in front of the fire with the candles lit.  First of all I was feeling very lazy so I made a green salad and then I ordered pizza, one with vegan cheese for us and mozzarella for the Rascals.
Then we watched a Christmas movie with James Stewart: The Shop Around The Corner.
Have you seen this movie?  It was so good!  I highly recommend.
I'll be all over town today, everywhere from the Orthodontist office (Lil Rascal) to the shoe repair place, the post office, bank and the one grocery store in town where I can source roasted chestnuts... hoping there hasn't been a run on them.
I hope you get everything done today,
xoxDani

  2. I've never seen this movie & I adore James Stewart. I am going to see if I can find it on Netflix or good ole' Amazon! I love the Scottish Highlander. What a dapper looking fella. I made your salmon last night. My husband said, it was the best thing he's ever eaten in his life (he does tend to say that quite often, nevertheless, it was that good!). This is the first time I've used a good drizzle of balsamic and marinated it. I served it with Smitten Kitchen's brussels sprouts with mustard cream sauce (I substituted almond milk) and your diced sweet potatoes with thyme. We have leftovers and will enjoy the meal again for lunch. Have a lovely day! x x

    1. Alicia I love your husband's enthusiasm! I'm so happy you made the salmon and that you enjoyed it, your accompanying vegetables sound PERFECT. So good that you have leftovers for lunch too. Thank you Alicia xx

  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKm1zRywsuI I don't know if this link will work but it is Liza Minnelli singing "Ding ding a ling" with an appearance from Grannie - so so so funny and if you live James Stewart my guess is that you will get an easy giggle out of this. Love that hedgehog and the highlander - we have ornaments from all over the world and each has a special story. Chore day here to day as well! Enjoy your time! Anna26x

    1. Dallas I think you're right You've Got Mail is the modern interpretation! And one of my favourites too. Can't believe I had never seen The Shop Around the Corner. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you as well. xx

  5. The hedgehog is adorable! I must find a little critter for my tree. So cute seeing the little face peeking out from the branches.

I thought I was one of few people who still took shoes to the cobbler. Isn't it nice there are still skilled people who repair shoes? DH and I both have pairs that have lasted years with good care.

    1. SD I live in fear of the day that we might not have our shoe repair place! What a gem it is. It's just around the corner and we use it often, I like to buy good shoes and wear them for years but those fellas are key. You're right it's all about good care.
Critters are the tree are so cute, we have a few because I can never resist them. I hope you find one too xx

  6. Love that cute hedgehog and Highlander; we also collect tree ornaments from around the world. I am looking for a special Ottawa one as we are having a mini holiday in the city for a bit of Christmas shopping.

  7. Love that sweet little hedgehog!
I purchased 3 knit hedgehogs at the craft fair...so adorable.
Your tree must be so pretty with all those ornaments...we cannot use our vintage ones because we have naughty cats who think they are toys and bat them around the house and they eventually break.
    Enjoy your day Dani
