Brora and Lochcarron of Scotland

Brora Wool and Mohair Coat
Fabric from Lochcarron of Scotland
Hermes Giverny scarf
I have an older Brora coat in a wool and mohair boucle fabric that is super warm on even the coldest days.
So when I saw this gorgeous blue coat in the same fabric, with a matching skirt, I knew it was just the  winter outfit I would wear on repeat for many years.
The Liberty cotton lining is absolutely exquisite, and the perfect compliment to the blue tones.  And the coral piping on the interior is an inspired choice!
Interior pocket with piping detail.
I've already worn this outfit twice, it is super comfortable and easy to wear, popped over a simple merino crewneck in black with black boots.
The interior tag states that the fabric is a wool and mohair blend from Lochcarron of Scotland.  This surprised me because I know Lochcarron as a producer of tartan fabrics, so this particular fabric must have been ordered specially for Brora.

Have you heard of Lochcarron?  If you have some Scottish ancestry (or even if you don't!) this is the place to source your perfect tartan skirt for holidays (you can have one made full-length) or for everyday wear (they'll make up a simple straight skirt for you out of your choice of tartan as well).

This is something I've been thinking of doing for years.  My grandfather was from Scotland, born in Edinburgh he immigrated to Canada at age twelve.  He was a Grant, and when I was a kid he had kilts made up for me in his clan tartan.  Through Lochcarron I could order a kilt or a skirt in Grant Ancient, Grant Modern or Grant Weathered.
You can check out their Ladies Tartan Hostess Skirt, and the various available tartans, here.

Back to the Brora coat and skirt and my love affair with it:

You can see this skirt is quite long at a below the knee length.  This is particularly good for extra chilly days, and the a-line shape makes it really easy for walking.  I went on a huge long walk with my friend Berna on Friday wearing this outfit.  The weather was cold and windy but I was kept toasty warm by the wool and mohair fabric.
I love the very subtle colour block detail at the hem:
I have a couple of scarves that suit this blue fabric, the Giverny shown above and this really vivid scarf in blue and violet shades:
Hermes scarf whose name I cannot remember.
 Without the coat:
I think I'll wear this coat and skirt again today!
Enjoy your Sunday Tooties, are you doing anything fun?  I'll definitely be watching the Oscars later on today, with some sparkling wine and snacks.  How about you?

  1. beautiful ensemble, Dani! Lochcarron, haven't heard of them before but I went to their site and much to my delight - you can order wool fabric!!! I love their tartans and I might order some yardage to make something! YAY!

So wonderful Brora uses Liberty for their linings. Amazing and beautiful! You really scored with these coats! I wonder if they do a Spring sale sort of thing, if so I might keep an eye out. How do you store your woolens in the summer?

I'm going to watch the Academy Awards, too. I especially enjoy the red carpet leading up to the actual event. Yes to the wine and snacks! Should be fun. Before that, I'll be continuing my work on my beaded sunflower collection. It's coming along slowly but surely! Have a great day!

    1. Vava thank you! The variety of tartans available at Lochcarron is amazing! What an incredible project that would be for you. Let me know if you embark on something.
I LOVE that Brora uses Liberty for their linings, they are really beautiful. And no polyester which makes me so happy. They will have another clearance, I remember it being in July but they occasionally will have a 3 day flash clearance of stock, I will post on the next one as soon as I see it.
I have an off-season closet where I am able to hang up everything, and I have a cedar chest where I store my Brora cashmere that is not in current rotation. I hang up my coats in the off-season closet for the summer, but I do clean it regularly with a mixture of castile soap, warm water and lavender oil. I also spray the Laundress wool-cashmere spray on my coats every couple of weeks, even in storage. I am TERRIFIED of moths and I hate them, if I see one in the house in summer I do a deep clean and that has always done the trick, fingers crossed!
I always look forward to the Oscars and then never last past 9pm! But like you I LOVE the red carpet! Have fun tonight xxx

    2. Dani, thanks for the info on the wool-cashmere spray. I use Laundress cashmere wash, hand soap and laundry detergent, and now I think I'd better buy some spray!!

  3. I always watch the red carpet coverage so I can get a really good look at all the gowns. I don't always stay engaged for the entire ceremony, though I try. I have a few favorite films this year and am very torn on best picture.

Like Vava, I'm curious if Brora does other sales. Their spring and summer merchandise is on the site now. I wonder when it will be marked down.

Your coat and skirt divine. The inside of these Brora coats is as beautiful as the outside with their hidden gem lining and piping. Are the skirts similarly lined? I especially love the scarves with the solid colored outfits.

    1. Thank you SD! I'm the same, once I get past the red carpet and the first few awards I have to go to bed! I'm definitely not a night owl.
My experience is that the next big sale (especially of the summer lines currently on offer) will be in July. I've bought knitwear and Christmas gifts during the July clearance in the past because it's such a good one. But as soon as I see the next sale I'll post on it!
I know those linings are so beautiful. The skirts (and the sleeves of the coats) are lined with cupro which is very comfortable over clothes and provides a good fit. Thank you, you can see wearing scarves has become my style as far as prints go! xxx

  4. So gorgeous I had a wool and mohair coat from Brora that I bought on sale a number of years back. My mother absolutely loved it and so I gave it to her. After she died, I couldn't find it (as well as a Chanel bag) but that coat got a lot of wear and love. These are both forever outfits. xo

    1. Kathy so nice of you to give it to your Mom! I'm sorry you couldn't find it after she died, I wonder what happened to it. I'm sure she really loved it and appreciated that you gave it to her. I'm sorry you've lost her.
      Thank you Kathy! xxx

  7. Pretty coat! When I checked the reviews about the coat, someone wrote that it is narrow in the shoulders, What dou you think?. The only thing I've never bought from Brora is a coat. I loved a navy alpaca coat a while back (I think you bought it too). If I remember correctly, it had a pretty nice lining too (birds?). I wear a lot of navy and I tought that I navy coat over navy clothes would make me look like a chocolate-filled Smurf (Schtroumpf). If I finally buy this coat I'm still going to look like a chocolate-filled Smurf, but I'm going to be the updated 3D version instead of the 50's version ;-). Have a nice week. Chocolate

  8. Dani, This is absolutely beautiful. The blue could not be more lovely and I adore the details of the lining and piping!! With your boots is perfect on you. I am sure you will wear it a ton. Enjoy your Sunday. We are finally getting a little sun. xo

  10. Chocolate laughing over Schtroumpf! Yes I read that review too so I ordered the coat in a 10, I would typically need an 8 for a Brora coat to fit the shoulders properly (I have a narrow shoulder span). It was a good choice I think, the fit is perfect.
MrBP gave me that navy alpaca coat for Christmas a few years ago! Such a beautiful coat, and yes you're right it has a Liberty lining of a bird print. It always just fit across the hips though and got a little snug the last couple of years, so now my daughter wears it (constantly) and she loves it! It still looks new. Brora coats are excellent investments. Hope you have had a nice week xxx
